Eva, this guy looks like it might need an oil change......lots of miles on this old devil. A good documentary take on this unit. Hard to say what this old diesel might have been used for, it's of size that could have sat in a chassis of an old truck or been mounted for farming, power plant, and or mine processing as you've mentioned.
The stuff I worked on up in Alaska along the DEW Line was anywhere from 4 times the size of this to as much as 10 times in size. That stuff was all major power plant units to provide support to the entire remote DEW Line facilities and the radar gear.

I dunno Eva, with a little paint, a few missing parts and WD-40 and you're off to a good start. There are plenty of old-school diesels still in service. Fun find.
