I found these relatively large crystals one cold day a couple of weeks ago. It's things like these that make macro photography such an interesting branch of photography.

f/22, ISO 100, 1 s, 100 mm macro.

C&C welcome, large version is included!

Roel

Indeed an outstanding collection of ice crystals, Roel.  I'm enjoying the hexagonal crystals in hexagonal patterns with the nice scattering of long crystals.  The sense of depth is a fine addition as well.

Hexagons on hexagons on... Beautiful shapes. Is it possible to zoom in some more? Did these crystals grow right there or is it some form of hail or snow? Great find and nice presentation.

Very nice detail and arrangement of these xtals!  This would be an excellent stacking challenge.

Thanks for the comments all!

Igor, this was full frame at the max magnification of this lens (1:1). Zooming in even more would have been sweet, but I didn't have my bellow system with me. Also, these were crystals that grew like this. It was a small frozen pond with patches of different crystals, most of them laying on their sides. But this patch had the crystals standing upright!

A very cool image, Roel.  I love the patterns and the geometry.  Thanks for amplifying on the scale and the situation where you found them.  If we get another cold spell this winter, I'll have to go looking.

Roel,

Thats quite an abstract. I would say that its takes a keen eye to visualize this and then make the image that has quite a bit of white in it. Very well done.
