This is a very colorful and interesting mix of blur and sharp, Eva. Sure has me wondering about the "how to", since you say it's not motion blur.

Hi Mark. I used Ian's technique of Vasaline on an old filter. Depending on how you smooth out the film, you can get different areas of blur and sharpeness. In this case the Vasaline was smeared on the filter in the horizontal direction.

Wow, this is really cool Eva. I like how the foliage is sharp but the upper area is blurred in a vertical direction. Very unusual. We (NPN) seem to be doing a lot of abstracts suddenly. I wonder why. I can see a fine composition where the sky is ommited, but that's not what you were after. Very nice creative image.

Going back to the old school tricks! This turned out very well, Eva. Did you also shoot it without the Vaseline? It would be interesting to compare the two if you did.

Nicely done, Eva. The effect is very interesting. The composition lends itself to this trick. You migh consider pulling the cyan down a tad. I love the Autmn colors.

My first thought was the same as Igor's, crop out the sky. I think that would add a bit more atmosphere to it. Great colors and comp, sure looks like a nice backyard. I must try that vaseline trick some day, looks very cool.

I'm still intrigued by how the technique produces the results. I guess I just don't get how a "horizontal smear" could produce the perception of vertical motion. But it doesn't matter really, at all - it's the result that matters and this is a success!
Like other comments, I may experiment with either cropping the blue up top or doing something with the color - either desat or something with the cyan. I really like the warmth of the image without the top 1/4 or so, but of course that's all just personal choice and what you like.

Hi Eva, This is really cool looking. I like what that vasaline effect did with this scene. The light and colors just add that much more to this as well. It does look good without the blue sky too. Nice backyard!!

Love the motion and the colors, lines, and shapes. The overall darkened mood is perfect for fall. I like the blue at the top, but I might think about cropping just a tad as it is the lightest part of the photo and the eye goes there. Still, a lovely image.
