1st Honorable Mention - Landscape

Kaleidoscape Glencoe

Loch Achtriochtan, Glencoe, Scotland

Loch Achtriochtan is very shallow and consequently settles down to a mirror smooth reflection much faster than its less sheltered and deeper cousins further up the glen. A heavy sky with broken cloud allowed splinters of sunlight through to paint the autumnal flanks of the steep sided mountains by the side of the A82 A nervous wait for a gap in the traffic and the perfect light to fall on the two trees ensued but finally got one shot that to me represents the very best of transient light.

Please view LARGE... tis better.

Pentax 67II, 55-100 zoom, 0.45ND grad, f/16 at 1/2 Second. Velvia.

This is incredible! At first glance, a wonderful abstract; a closer look reveals a beautifully patterned and detailed landscape bathed in the sweetest of light. Absolutely beautiful.

The colors and reflections do make it look like an abstract. The trees and the fence bring that back to reality. Works wonderfully in either case!

Subtle and beautiful. The gentle sweep of the lines of the scene is a nice contrast to the rocky terrain above. Colors look a bit muted for the Velvia, maybe it's my work monitor. A modest boost in contrast /sat. might be in order.

Hi Patricia

I have a square version but this was the only time the sun played across the trees rather than elsewhere on the slope and the only time there was a lull in the traffic when the trees were lit. Makes a nice square image though.

Hi Harry

I am always interested to know how my images are perceived on different monitors. This appears moderately contrasty on my machine and matches the transparency very accurately for colour sat and contrast. It is bordering on too much strength of colour for me. maybe others are seeing it very differently interested to know.

You just don't get that feeling of a transient light in the BW. The colour is great, one of the best of many I've seen from here.

Stunning large scale abstract Ian! The color, light, and symmetry are excellent. Your B&W treatment works well, but seeing the color version first makes it hard to beat.

Ian, this is goreous - love the abstract yet real feel. One minor nit is that the reflection appears slightly brighter than the object. Should be an easy fix.

Wow Ian...just awesome. Definetely transient light at it's best! I vote for color. Also, it seems to be tilted down to the left, but that may be an illusion due to the curvature of the shoreline.

OH MY Ian, this is outstanding! The color, the light, symmetry - and the comment about the abstract transforming to a landscape is quite fitting. Color version by far.

Traffic? well, guess I'm gonna have to move this to.... JK.

This simply is one gorgeous reflectionscape. And I think we've seen images from this area before? Just looks like a gold mine of light. whew.

WOW!! This is superb Ian. Excellent compositional skills at work here (as usual), and it has such visual impact too. One of those images that really make your day when you view it. I like the B&W too, but it doesn't have anywhere near the impact (for me anyway) as the color version.

Absolutely incredible, Ian. Glorious light and an amazing composition; the abstract design within the landscape is stunning. Most definitely 'the very best of transient light'.
edit: just saw the b/w version. Appreciate the tones but for me, the color version is by far better. It just really sings.

Absolutely stunning! I love the different layers of colors, lights and details. The reflection makes it a very strong image.
(the B&W is also nice, but the color one is that sings) saturation looks just perfect on my monitor.
