One of those images that strikes a 'chord' with me. Simple and effective. I too love the haunting call of loons, one of my favorite birds.
Great image Stuart

Very nice image. Excellent mood and artistry to this. I do find the upper half is a little washed out, and I prefer this as a horizontal cropped just above the darker reeds. Just my subjective opinion, of course.

Spendid, minimal and extremely attracting. Where really less is more... I like it a lot. It reminds me of some
old elemental landscapes of Harry Callahan (the photographer, not the detective...).

Interesting composition and title. I like the repeated patterns of the grasses, although I would be tempted to crop the upper portion just above the foreground grasses. What inspired the title?

I really like the simple comp. of this image. The crop is fine as is, but I also think there are other crops that could even focus the attention on the prominent stems at the front of the image.

Love this, I would either crop this also or clone out the lighter reeds, which would give you more empty space above, which I like. But I think I would go for the crop on this one

Absolutely love the design of your image, Stuart. The strong graphic appeal of these grasses set against that wonderful light gray makes these grasses appear to be suspended in mid air. I also love the contrast between the foreground grasses and those in the background; the further grasses almost act like a soft echo of those in front and to me further your title / intent. While I can appreciate the suggestions on a crop, I wouldn't touch this, in all honesty. This is superb as presented, a stunning b/w image.

Beautiful and minimalistic Stuart. I really like it just the way it is since a crop would make this loose its very ethereal character.

I also see two lovely comps here, each one strong enough to stand on its own.

thanks to all for comments - all very much appreciated. like you all, i presume, i walk out of the door with a camera in hand and then try to live within the frame that it presents. each camera has it's own frame - that which one can see within the viewfinder and maybe translated one day into a print. i use the hassy quite a lot at present - i enjoy the fact that i can carry two or three magazines, each loaded with a different film; i enjoy the glass afforded by the zeiss lenses - so i live within the 6x6 frame that comes with it. (and i believe i would enjoy working with a 5x4 - for the added control that one would have over the exposure - development process to produce fine negatives.) i rarely - very rarely - look at a scene and think, okay, i will crop this down. hence my preconception was largely borne out here. the crop has merits no doubt, but i'm living comfortably with this as it is.
as for the title, greg, it seemed to me that the grasses were as musical notes; maybe a touch unfinished, as with schubert ...
thanks again to all. happy to hear what anyone else has to say!

Very Pretty Stuart. I like the minimal approach you've taken. I like the composition and format you've chosen, but agree a horizontal format would work as well. Nicely seen.
