This is really engaging, due both to the ring and the mist or smoke as you point out. Nicely seen and executed!
For fun I did a "screen crop" to eliminate the left side and turn this into a vertical. There's almost a dizzying sense that the ring is falling through space, something seen from a space telescope perhaps. I don't know if it meets your goals for the photo, but that vertical crop has interesting possibilities!

Mordor, indeed. This has a sinister feel to it and the large version is startling in its clarity. You can almost see the pulse of the heat. Excellent image
