windy dunes

this is a pretty simple layered composition of the big dunes north of maputo in mozambique. this was the morning of departure from the area following a couple of nights camping with friends and family. this morning, the southerly wind was howling across the dunes, bringing cool air from antartica - so at 20 deg centigrade - this was a chilly winter's day in mozambique. brrrr. the air was full of stuff - dust, sand - and creating textures and layers and highlights. this, by the way, is in full glorious technicolor but the stuff in the air made it almost perfectly duotoned.

Have a look at the L A R G E R version for details of those textures.

this'll be my last post for a few weeks - off for a road trip in mozambique, zimbabwe and south africa - taking in some scuba diving, the chimanimani mountains (from the mozambique side), the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, Gonarezhou and down for a couple of days' hiking in the Blyde River Canyon. Out on Sunday, back sometime in July!

Thanks for looking - let me know your thoughts, comments and critiques!

Wonderful textures here Stuart. I like the sepia tone effect created by the dust. Have a great trip!

Very very nice shot. Love the lines and the texture of the frame. At first it looks like B/W or Sepia, but it looks like there are some color tones in it.

Enjoy your trip to Africa.

This is beautiful Maputo.. I like the distant scenery . I would have included some strong patterns in the foreground and going bit low, layers would have worked if the fg to middle had some repetition similar to the top portion
Thanks for sharing this :)

That's quite a road trip you've got planned . . . hopefully you'll come away with some fine pictures while you're out there. This shot works well for me, particularly the layered composition. For some reason I find the two small bumps (or whatever) just along the water at the extreme LHS of the frame a bit distracting, perhaps because the rest of the landscape is relatively uniform and lacking distinct small features.

Feels very desolate, Stuart. The water forms an unexpected focal point for me. Have a great trip. Will look forward to the image you bring back.

Love the receding layers and of course those amazing textures in the sand. The b/w conversion works quite well. Really has a feeling of an empty, barren land, a forbidding place even. Remarkable work as always. Have a safe trip and look forward to seeing the new images.

I like this! All the layers and the wonderful texture makes this very interesting. The blowing sand and dust really creates a mood here. Nice work Stuart. Have a great trip. I know I will look forward to seeing some of your images when you return.

Hi Stuart - I like the starkness of this image a lot. The layers, tones, and textures are all quite interesting to me. Nice work!

Have a great trip - sounds like it will be an adventure.

Stuart,

Even though I'm enjoying the wonderful layering and texture in the dunes, I almost immediately thought of a pano crop removing the bottom layer/dune. Not quite sure why, but for some reason I'm attracted to the hazy, almost mysterious background. I guess I can live with your original posting here though. ;-) Well seen and captured.

Hey, have a great trip. Sounds like a great adventure. Be safe and come back with some great imagery to share.

A belated congrats on this excellent image, Stuart. Superb layering and textures, and the comp is excellent. A mood of vast emptiness.
