This lake is up the South Fork Eagle River Valley of Chugach SP near Anchorage, Alaska.  A rather popular 6 mile trail will take you to this lake.  Made this picture one beautiful, still September evening a number of years ago.  The angles and forms I thought were pretty neat;  might be a little shadow heavy on the right side though.  I did clone out some rocks in the lower right hand corner that seemed distracting to the overall design of the image.

4x5, 210mm, Velvia, warm polarizer.  Tony Kuyper's masks and others used in processing.

Larger, detail view attached as well.

Would appreciate your comments, suggestions, critiques, or thoughts.

Thanks.

Vance, What a perfect mirrored image this is. Yes, the shadows are deep and but I'm ok with that. It just seems to add to the overall impact of this beautiful scene. The light and colors are wonderful. I think it looks great.

This is outstanding as is. I think the shadow makes the image since the other parts are so bold and colorful. I definitely noticed all the triangular elements. They are a powerful repeating shape throughout.

When I post a comment, I make it under the assumption that critiques are strongly desired.    When I post a picture, I am seeking any and all advise and strongly encourage critiques and nits. I am here for the sole purpose of improving. I enjoy praise too of course.

This is fabulous, Vance. The repeating shapes with the lines and angles  are gorgeous and I love the balance of all the shapes in the scene. i am on the fence though about those lighter colored areas of snow in the shadows. I might be inclined to burn them down some more or clone them out. Just a suggestion of course.

Really awesome shot!

As you mention, I'd advocate for a hair more shadow detail, but not much.  Also, I'm on a monitor calibrated to 130CD (brightness) pretty standard for web these days.

Fascinating composition made of a set of triangles. The colors on the left are just fabulous, elegantly offset by all that black. The tops of the mountain seems to be too close to the frame but if you add more sky you lose the all important triangles. Overall it reminds of an sophisticated, elegantly dressed lady in black adorned with bright jewelry. In fact, it you look at the image on it's end does look somewhat like a portrait. In fact the image looks just as appealing on it's side as it does presented. I think that because of that strong black the image starts to look like an abstract. Excellent work.

the only thing that i have to say about this otherwise outstanding image is that the peak might have been given a little more breathing room above it. Fabulous!

Greatt reflection and strong shapes, lines and color. Yeah, the blocked up shadows are a little on the heavy side for me, but it works anyway.

The lighting is wonderful, Vance.  The "golden" peak and it's reflection are outstanding.  The high contrast works well.  A very well executed presentation.

Hi Vance,

Ahhh, my first reaction to this was.... Velvia!!!  I have some images from Glacier Bay with similar results with the shadows.

In today's dslr age, everyone is looking for shadow detail, and in film yesteryear we understood how film just lacked the dynamic range - so we went with it.  Here, the deep shadows create a wonderful graphic.  This image isn't about shadow detail, it's about form, lines and graphics. The strength and beauty of this image is in the light areas anyway, not the shadows.  The lines of sunlit areas on both sides are wonderful with the mirrored reflections creating such graphic symmetry.  Awesome!

The one small nit is a wish for just a tad more room above the peak (and below..)  I'm guessing you don't have a 180 in your bag? angel enlightened

Great work Vance!

The comp is excellent, the shapes and reflections are perfect. A bit more detail in the shadows would be nice, but this works great as is as well. Especially the piece of land pointing like an arrow from the right is really sweet.

I really like the clarity here. Nice color and wonderful collection of shapes as others have noted. I agree that there needs to be a little more space above the top mountain. Very nice feeling in this image.

Vance,
I love the symmetry , shapes, and lines in this image. There are so many cool triangles in this capture, and the play of shadow and light is excellent. Maybe some more room up top, but small stuff.

Excellent image

I like the the cleanness of this and the purity of the reflection. The shadows don't bother me much...sometimes the best reflections are mid-day, and of course, shadow detail will be hard to capture with such bright sky.

Terrific image with strong graphic appeal! Perfectly fine as composed but would have been nice to have a bit more breathing room at the top. I suspect you did not have that option. Great work.
