This cooperative Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) let me get quite close as it watched over my pond from this perch on a milkweed leaf.  That allowed me to emphasize the details in it's eyes with this single shot, nearly life size view.  The larger view shows the eye facets well.  (5D3, 180mm macro + 1.4TE, 1/40s, f/10, iso 200, tripod)

Now that is a great shot! The eyes and head are spot on.

How do you train these guys to stay long enough to setup your tripod and take the shot?

Excellent sharpness at the face/head, one even see some great eye segment detail as well Mark.

Great color & portrait style comp too.

I like the near wing edge in sharp focus, it leads your eye up & through the frame left.

LP looks very nice, well done!devil

Hi Mark,

A nice perspective and I'm surprised that the eye facets are not revealed in this close-up. (I re-examined the shot on another monitor and the eye facets were revealed nicely!  My apologies to Mark--I knew that you would not sacrifice any detail on a shot like this one.).  Thanks Howard for letting me know that you saw them .  Hmmmmm, maybe I need a new monitor.  Colors and comp look good..............Jim

Mark, I like the perspective and the sharp detail in the eyes. The blue color is beautiful. Very nicely done!

Mark - Love it when the magnification resolves the compound eyes of the Dragonfly. Very beautiful
