Dug this transparency out of the archives from my days living in Alaska. Believe it or not, my wife and I had this spot along Wonder Lake to ourselves on this evening one autumn a number of years ago. Nothing too original but the colors in the clouds and the glow on the mountain were quite nice. Tried to bring out a little detail in the foreground but the details of those distant dark shadows were lost. Would appreciate your thoughts and comments on this image.
4x5, 120mm, Velvia.

Please take a look at the large image.

Thanks.

Real pretty, Vance. The lack of shadow detail doesn't bother me a bit.

Beautiful piece, Vance. The color and the glow of Denali and the clouds is really nice. The lack of detail in the dark ridge doesn't bother me at all. Well done!

Vance, it's always inspirational when you display your work. I love the tension between the the dark ridge line and the snow capped peaks. The wonderful reflection is icing on the cake. Looks like a sweet evening to enjoy with your wife.

A place of wonder, for sure; this scene captures it with a stunning presentation. If I might echo for a third time...the pure black ridge works well. IMO, the reds could be toned down just a touch, but that's all I'd dare comment on with such a work of art like this! :)

This is beautiful, Vance. Beautifully composed with wonderful color. While the deep shadows pull my eye a little it's not enough to be a distraction.

The quality in the scan is great, Vance (of course working from a 4x5 may play a modest role, ) The colors and sense of depth are great. I think this works well, even the dark ridge, but the strength of both the darks and the brights shows how much better the dynamic range of digital is relative to slide films.

I'm not really bothered by the lack of detail in the foreground, it's a twilight after all. Love the way those mountains look, partly covered in snow. Well done!

Nice Vance:

A throwback to the film era, Velvia at that. Greta for the saturated colors but maybe not for the dynamic range. Add to the fun of scanning, you have a nice image here. This is late August, beginning of September? Always a privilege to see Denali in one of her good moods!

Cheers: Tom

I agree with everyone. This is truly a stunning image. The dynamic range of tones, especially noticeable in the large size, is what raises it higher than most such images. The jet black far shore adds a drama to the scene and takes it to the next level. If that ribbon of reflected light came completely across to the edge of the frame, bisecting the dark section, I think it would help the composition. The foreground is subtle and lovely.

Heh, even your signature adds to the image. How often can you say that?

Thank you everyone for your great comments. Very much appreciate it. Wish Fuji still made Velvia; even with all its limitations (4 stop dynamic range) it was great film.

Thanks again.

Hi Vance. You know, I have often found myself specifically looking for your name/work in the landscape gallery, and this is another example of why I am so taken by your style and art. This is a wonderful, serene image with simple but strong lines and composition. I have no nits or suggestions whatsoever, but did want to say that this prompted me to click through to your site again and once more I found myself enamored by your work. You have some stunningly beautiful pieces, Vance. Your Pattern, Line and Form gallery alone is a top-notch portfolio, never mind all the wonderful images found throughout the site. And kudos for staying true to your medium as well.

Vance, This really is a wonderful image! The colors are beautiful as are the reflections. The dark shadows add to the image for me and you composition brings everything together beautifully. I shot alot of Velvia over the years and agree it was a great film. Excellent work as always with you!

Good day Vance,

This image has such a wonderful classic photography feel about it's nature. The colors are divine, and your composition is beautifully composed. The dark areas work so well to add to the beauty in this capture.

Stunning photography Vance

In a perfect world I would wish to have a little detail in the slope on the right (that's probably me just wanting to find something to critique), but overall that's very minor in the composition and the feeling i get from the image. That must have been an incredible experience in a very special place...

Vance, this is near and dear to my heart for a few reasons. First, I spent two years traveling the entire state of Alaska on an engineering team. Secondly, it was photographed with a 4x5 and add to it a 120 lens one of my most popular perspectives for that image size. And third, is of course Velvia 50. Great trifecta here.

Congratulations on the WP for this image in the always tough landscape gallery.

btw: Velvia 50 is happy and alive in 4x5 in Japan. I got a 100 sheets awhile back dated 2016.......
