I have to say this is a bit too stylized for me. The reds look overdone and the reflection is better than the real sky.
It looks dramatic, but I would tone down the reds and work on the upper half. The real sky needs some contrast and the same clarity as the reflection.

Really, really nice, Vance. Good to see another LF guy around here, too. This is quite a place, and the light is lovely with a strong composition. I think I'd like the blacks in the sitkas brought down just a tad.

For me, this image is pretty fantastic Vance. On my monitor, the sky and reflection look fine, and the reds are not overdone IMO. I think this is one of the most unique Olympic coastal images I've yet seen. Kudos!

Vance, Wow! I absolutely love this! The light is beautiful, but what I really like is the fantastic mood you captured.
I have been there too with my photography...and all in recent months. I'm looking forward to a fall color trip and trying to get a grip on things. Cheers...

The red light from sunset is pretty intense! I might try adjusting the blacks and reduce the red a little and see what it looks like. The trees look a little hazy and an adjustment might improve this. Well balanced, though a bit unconventional. I like it

Sublimity to a new level Vance. I think I fell into the state you mention about 15 years ago and I am still there, its evolving.

If you contemplate the sublimity of The Sublime then all suspicion will sublimate into certainty about what you are seeing and what you saw and what you will see. The fog of illusion will then vanish and only Reality will remain without any doubt or suspicion. |

Amazing light Vance! Just love the reflections and warm light. Yes, very sublime indeed. Guess we all go through this but glad to hear it verbally from someone of prominence / amazing images. Yes , I said amazing.

great image vance. i wonder if you made another, perhaps with a bigger lens (300mm?) isolating the red trunks and the reflection - with those great looking logs in the water. Also no problems with cloning out the clones.
Re stagnation, I think it hits all. But I thought of an article written by Mike Stacey about that thinking stuff ...!!

Vance,
This is very pretty, sublime, and peaceful. I also see God's handiwork in images like this. It's a privilege to witness and photograph scenes like this.
There are a lot of intersecting lines on the left side of the image where the logs in the water intersect with the tree reflections. It competes a bit with the right side of the image, but it's not too much IMO.
Good job cloning out the other photographers. I didn't notice any remnants. People can definitely get in the way of shooting sometimes.

the reds look fine to me, what a fine reflection... only improvement I can think of would be the large stone not obstructing the reflection of the little one behind... but that is beyond your control, therefore rather meaningless... great shot!

Hey Vance, wonderful to see an image post from you. Don't worry too much about the baloney.... but know that I'm in the same funk as well. In fact haven't had my camera out of the bag since May. ;-)
On to brighter things though, like your beautiful coastal image. A wonderful scene, I love the reflecting pool and I recall the tremendous amount of driftwood and logs on these Olympic beaches.
I do want to touch on what others have, but perhaps from a different angle. Hard to say if the reds are too red in the trees, that's always a matter of taste. To me though, it looks like there was too much shadow recovery going on in the trees. Not saying you tried to bring out the shadows, but that's how it's looking to me. Compared to the nice darks and contrast in the reflection (someone mentioned the sky, but I think the trees is what needs some tweaking. But then as I've thought about it, there are other factors too, like the sea mist, which becomes more apparent the further you get down the beach. I dunno... but if it were mine, I might drop the darkest darks a little bit in the trees.
Thanks for posting!
Lon

Hi Vance a lovely shot unusual to see a red shot from you. I usually associate you with green. Anyway for the record this seems to be quite different from your other work and I find it enjoyable. Good luck with your photographic mojo finding.

Thanks everyone for all the great comments and suggestions. I plan on incorporating these ideas into another edit of this image, working on the reds, the shadows in the trees and the contrast differences between the top and bottom half of the image. I really appreciate everyones suggestions. I also really appreciate the encouragement you all have given me; knowing that I am not alone in wondering where to take my work really helps.
Thanks again.
