It's a Wonderful Life

I am most happy when I am wandering among the natural wonders of the world. Yes, people talk about how the slot canyons have been heavily photographed, but for me that does not detract at all from the feeling of wonderment I have walking alone in the warm swirling glow of one of nature's true masterpieces.

Self portrait in a slot canyon somewhere in the Southwest.

This is a great self portrait and one to treasure for your trip to the slots. I like the placement of yourself near the brighter portion of the image and your orange shirt (intentional  ) adds to the image  . A definite keeper for memories...

Man if I didn't know any better, I'd swear you'd placed a light just around the corner for the effect. Excellent composition and exposure control. Seeing these images with the human element included, really reminds me that I need to get out there and experience some of those slot canyons in person sometime.

Eric,

This lighting occurs best near the summer solstice. A beam of light shines straight down to the bottom of the canyon just behind the right wall illuminating the left wall like a spotlight. During the rest of the year the beams don't reach the bottom and you don't get this effect at the ground level where you can include the human element. It's hot to hike out into the more remote canyons at this time of year, but well worth the effort from a photography point of view!

The surrounding canyon walls would make a superb image in themselves. I like the pose you adopted. By looking up at the walls you draw attention back to the canyon.

Amazing how color coordinated you are with the canyon

I think this is the best photo of a person in a slot canyon that I've ever seen. There is some advantage to a photographic self-portrait, but there are also difficulties. The "looking up" pose is a personal favorite of mine, and my website even features my own self-portrait in a in a canyon with a somewhat similar pose.

Kent,

Ya, that self portrait of you in the narrows is awesome! I agree self portraits can be tough to do when you're out alone but at least you know you'll get the pose right and you won't have to deal with model releases!

Great shot Mike. You ought to post this in the Member Photo Forum as well. It's nice to get a sense of scale for the slots too for us Floridians who have never actually seen one! Congrats on ther EP!

Have a figure in the slot makes it all the more real.
