Island in The Corn

Ythan Wells, near Huntly, Aberdeenshire.
Wide open rural landscapes with rolling hills characterise this place. I was captivated by the small island of trees beneath a tumultuous sky nestling between fields of alternating yellow and green. The scene struck me as reminiscent of a flag from a foreign country.

My kids on the other hand see a big hairy caterpillar out for a stroll in the sunshine, well they're three and five, which do you prefer?

Scale is something of an issue in this picture but if you look very carefully in the right hand green field those little specks of white are actually sheep grazing.

Ian,

Wow! What a sky! How did you take this. Where were you shooting from?

At first I did not realize that clump of dark was trees.

The only thing that bothers me about this photo is that it appears to be on a slant as opposed to level.

Patchwork sky and earth. All fits well indeed. Dreamy and almost abstract. Very well done Ian.

Hi Carol, it is truly just the way of this particular section of land. It is perhaps unfortunate there is no point of reference but this is a particularly rolling section of hills. I promise you it is level.

Contax ST, 28 - 85mm lens taken to exclude the foreground and realise the patchwork patterns as well as to make the most of that very big and stormy sky.

Definitely a caterpillar creeping long the patchwork of fields trying to get out from the impending storm!!! Love it, Ian...colors of the field and the sky are vibrant and strong and the stormy clouds are terrific.

Great colors and graphic, Ian. Is the corner of the brown field a little bit below the edge of the frame? I think I'd have liked to see that.

Ian, you weren't kidding about the scale being deceptive...had no idea that the scene was so expansive! So...um...I see a big hairy caterpillar crawling across a flag from a foreign country...does that help? (LOL) I really *do* like this! It looks like classic surreal art -- Magritte comes immediately to my mind.

Extraordinary collection of colours. The yellow really stands out against the green which reminds me a lot of one of Charlie Waite's most famous shots actually, although the 2 shots are completely different in mood.
