This is a female scarlet tanager that was checking me out along the board walk at the Black Swamp Bird Observatory.  I generally try to avoid this place as it is very crowded with birders and photographers.  This was taken a few years ago and this bird was only 3 feet off the trail and about 6 feet from the ground. About 50 birders walked blindly past this bird without even noticing it.  Once the crowds cleared, the bird sat around for about 5 minutes and I moved back and took several shots.  I like the pose on this, but wish that the light was brighter so that I could get more DOF. 300mm f4 (1/640 sec at f6.3, ISO 800) Hand-held (Levels, brightness & Contrast)........................Jim

ps.: The reasons that this is not a female summer tanager are tooth on upper mandible and dusky brownish wings and tail.

Looks good to me as posted. Good work handling the sky and light. I too like the pose.

I also like the pose and the fact that it appears to be looking down.  Good detail and nice color.  I do find some of the out of focus gray branches in the background above the bird a little distracting but it would be difficult to clone them out.  The image really gives one a sense of being there.

You caught the Tanager in a nice pose.  Good detail.  The overall composition gives a nice sense of place.

Excellent catch, Jim and beautiful detail in the plumage.  I too like the pose.  While not a very photographer-friendly background you handled it nicely.  Congratulations on the GOTM.
