Rufous-backed Robin (Turdus rufopalliatus)

Buckeye AZ
Date: October 29, 2017, 11:45 am
Equipment: Nikon D7200, AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR @ 480mm,  Induro CLT303 tripod with RRS-BH 55 ball head
Exposure: ISO 1250, Aperture priority matrix spot, 1/320th @ f/8
Raw, PS CC 2017 on Mac, 43% of full frame

This is more for the birders than the photographers. Rufous-backed Robin (or Rufous-backed Thrush as currently named) is a Mexican species that shows up along the southern U.S. border states from TX to CA in winter. AZ gets the most reports, and I’ve seen them in 15 of the 24 years I’ve been here. But instead of the usual one or two birds around this year so far we’ve got at least nine birds confirmed. This bird was seen at a small neighborhood park.

Hi Richard,

All field marks are clear and exposure looks pretty good.  The head is nicely detailed and the pose gives some hint of how they forage out in nature. Well done......................Jim

This one has a little bit of a painterly feel to it.  I think that's because it was in the shade.  Detail looks good.  Nice pose and composition.  Even though it appears that it's on a sidewalk I don't find that objectionable.

Interesting. Like its American cousin in city activity (i.e., ground foraging). A well made and understated photo.

Nice find and well photographed. I could see this cropped to remove the ground in the right lower corner.

Cool, Richard.  I've heard of these, but never seen one.  The pose really shows off the rufous back.

Great find Richard! Nice work bringing out the details in what looks like a tough lighting situation.
