Scaled Quail

by Keith Bauer

On our morning walk yesterday, I saw this Scaled Quail perched on this Cholla Cactus.  This is a common place to find these birds in our desert climate.  This one was singing away.  I had my Olympus with me and was able to get a few images.

Techs:

Olympus EM-5 Mark II
14-150 @ 150mm
1/1250 @ f/5.6
ISO 200

Larger version provided (shows nice detail in the plumage)

Very cool textures and light on this image.  And it's always wonderful to get a calling pose.  That is one fascinating quail as I have never seen this species before.  I suppose one needs such adaptations in an environment with cactus and armadillos (kidding of course).

Very nice. I have to go south to Wilcox or Sierra Vista to see this species in AZ, and it is a long time since I've done that.

Great singing pose Keith and I love the included cactus and the oof bg. Remarkable detail in the Quail in the large version. Excellent colors!

Nice job on handling the shadows in this one, Keith, with a good singing pose and perch.

Love the morning light and singing pose Keith. Also always a fan of the Cholla as a perch. I didn't even know you owned an Olympus!

BTW, looks like I will be relocating to southern Arizona soon, so I might be seeing a lot of these guys soon. sad

Oh, if only the cactus was blooming!  Nice perch, pose and background as is.  His singing takes this over the top.

I like this singing pose of this "cotton top quail".  The intersection of the tail and the cactus is less than ideal, but certainly acceptable considering The difficulties of getting a shot of a shy bird.
