Last November

I made this picture last November as part of my Moods of November series. I ran out of weeks for posting it so just saved it for later, and I guess that is now. Once again it was in the Wisconsin River Bottoms in the early morning light with most of the fog burned off at this time and I really enjoyed the light and feel of this one. Right now the river is flooded and this area is under a few feet of water. I shot some pictures of the high water and heavy fog this morning and might post one of those pretty soon.
Canon 5D3, 28mm, ISO 160, F/16 and 1/6 sec. tripod. Large version should be much better! Thanks.

I like the arrangement of the tree trunks and balanced light Nick.  I am kind of on the fence about the horizontal branch in the center.

The soft, warm light is nicely realized, Nick. Like Eva, I am on the fence with the dark horizontal branch. I like the composition and detail. You captured a nice mood, here.

Beautiful warm light illuminating an essentially warm subject, which gives this image an alternative mood to the usually greyish decaying one we usually associate with November. The horizontal branch is more of a curiosity than actually being offensive. What bothers me is the bright green foliage in the midst of all of that brown. I would either clone it out or drop it's luminosity to deep forest green. I like the scattered leaves throughout the woods. Nice work.

Thanks Eva and Preston. I'm glad you liked the light and mood as that is what this image was about for me. I can see that the branch could be kind of distracting and maybe to most it is. I guess I could have removed it pretty easy before I shot the picture but it just didn't bother me at the time. Probably should have tried it both ways and then decided...enlightened Nick

Igor, I guess you commented while I was making my comment. Thanks much for your thoughts on this. The green was unusual for this time of year last November and I understand it doesn't seem quite in balance with the browns. In the larger version I did tone it down some but it probably could use more. As always thanks for giving me your thoughts (and help) on my work. Nick

I like this Nick.  I'm not in love with the branch, because everything the trunks are mostly vertical.  It would be a time consuming clone, but I might try it. (mainly because I enjoy the tediumlaugh).  The greens definitely jump out, but I love the somber nature of the image.

The view feels like more like a spring morning, with the new foliage poking through the matted leaves of winter.  Later fall and early spring can have that same kind of feel.  The horizontal branch seems a bit out of place considering the rest of the image - if there were more of them I think it might work better for me.  Otherwise very nice image and mood.  Looking forward to seeing the flooded fog images.

Your posting comment identifies what is excellent here, Nick, which is the soft early morning light. There's often great light as fog burns off, and you timed the light well here. There's still enough fog to qualify this for your "Moods of November" theme. I think I agree with others about the horizonatal branch, though.

Splendid Nick.  The blue sky and water interact well with the brown of the woods.  The way the trees are splayed on each side is also very appealing - is that real or just due to lens distortion (looks real).  Beautiful light too.  For me, the horizontal branch is neither a positive nor negative, it just is.

Thanks to all of you for giving me your thoughts on this.
Bill, The lean of the trees is natural and that was part of why I set this comp up as it is. My feelings on the branch are pretty much the same as yours. Probably better without it but it didn't really bother me either. Thanks, nick

The patch of silver blue reflection is great and makes the scene, imo

Nick,  The quality of the soft light is beautiful here.  The large version is a must of course to take this all in.  I like the fact that the fog/mist obscures the blue sky just enough so it's not too bright and I also really like the sprinkling of greens in the foreground.  The little pool of water breaks things up and gives the forest some depth.

A lovely and understated image.   You've got the "eye" for these!

The color and mood is just phenomenal here.  How often does an errant, horizontal branch add so much to an image???  That little pond has the perfect reflection, and the fall colors add warmth. The depth you got in this is amazing.  I don't really mean DOF, but the feeling of depth all the way back there in the trees.  Super nice!devil

Nick, you give me an immediate impression of the atmosphere. The slight haze in the distance just makes the difference for me.
