In the Gorge

This is a picture I shot a couple of years ago. I posted a shot of this back then but now starting to like this tighter shot better. Thought I would post it here and see what you thought of it. This is in the deep gorge area that Skillet Creek runs through. It is about 40 miles from where I live here in Wisconsin. Taken in the early morning light and before several other people (photographers mostly) showed up. It is a pretty cool place and especially if you are willing to get wet. Large Version Included.

An excellent composition of an intriguing location. I might like to see a little more detail in the shadows.

Nie composition and color, Nick. I agree about bringing up the shadows, if possible. I like the warmth of the fallen leaves against the cool rocks and water. Nice job.

Thanks guys! Although I actually like the darker shadows I did this version bringing the shadows up some. I do think it works this way as well but will probably prefer the original. I'll look for awhile and maybe decide I like this version after all. cool Thanks for your suggestions on it. They are always so helpful in fine tuning images. Nick

This is beautiful, Nick. Love the various shapes and the way the rocks converge. The colors are great. I could see taking a bit off the bottom, all things being equal, but certainly fine as is.

Very nice Nick.  I like it as posted originally myself.  Excellent composition and processing; no nits at all.

Nick, this is spectacular.  It has a great sense of mystery, like a portal into some magical world. Love it.

Love the window framing the falls. Great saturated colors. I'm a dark shadow man myself so prefer the original.

I like the unusual composition of the image. Nice colors and textures. I like both images, but I think I might lean slightly toward the second image.

The framing of this is pretty spectacular, as is the lighting. I like that the reflection shows what is hidden behind the rock wall.  Makes excellent use of the reflection - to show what isn't seen above in the image which is usually the case.  Love the green moss in the reflection.  The falls really pop out - not due to size but tonal contrast - and not overly cyansad.  Impressive shot.

What en excellent natural frame and I think you did very well with the dynamic range. The reflection colors are killer. I like the OP.

Nick, this is very nice with the framing by the curved rock on the left and the green reflection.  Slight nod to the first image.

What a wonderful perspective, Nick.  I love the green reflection and the orange leaves atop the water.  I love how the reflection makes me feel like I can see something that isn't otherwise visible from this position. Very nice work on this.

Excellent perspective from this angle, Nick. One of those images that leaves us reaching out in attempt to see beyond the corner of the right hand overhanging rock formation. Very nice......laugh

Great vision and execution!  Color is quite rich and nice without being garish. The leaves in the background seem (to me, just got up..) slightly soft, a lot of depth to the scene so one has to pick their focal plane battles.

Overall super nice!

Wow!! What an image!! I disagree about the shadows - I like the original version quite a bit more - but then, I am a dark image sort of dude. Regardless, an absolutely outstanding image!!

The original with the darker shadows works best for me, Nick. I think it adds a little more mystery to the scene along with those ghostly reflections. The autumn leaves scattered about the scene are also another wonderful element. This is being super picky, but I could also see the water toned down just a touch where it enters the pool. Either way this is a beauty.

Absolutely gorgeous, Nick.  Love the view through the tunnel-like gorge, the stunning color, the fantastic lines of the rock, the outstanding reflection, and beautiful color.  An incredible image. I do prefer the original post with the deeper shadows.

This is a stunning image, Nick. I first thought this was a 4X5. Shot with Velvia as we often see from Vance. The green pool below with the warm leaves suspended over it makes a marvelous color palette. The overall composition is very strong as well. One of your best images in recent memory. Truly remarkable. Yes, the original is superior. The dark blacks give it a certain elegance the repost lacks.

Igor, Thank you! Your comment means a lot to me. And yes, Original version works best for me as well. I felt the lighter shadows version seem to lose something and you put it nicely into words. I did shoot a lot of Velvia over the years. cool Nick
