Every once in a great while we are treated to a grand experience that transcends our every-day life. Such was the case for me and a group of photographers on October 1, 2005. I have seen many wave clouds over the Sierra, but this one was exceptional, not only because of its color and luminosity, but also because of its size: It literally stretched the length of the range from Lone Pine, north to Lake Tahoe.
We had watched this cloud form during most of the afternoon. As sunset time approached, we set up and waited. The cloud started to glow a bit and then faded (the sun had gone into a cloud deck to the west). A little while later, when the sun dropped below the cloud deck, the light exploded! We were so awe-struck, it was hard to break away and concentrate on photography!
I made three exposures, this one being the being the best of the lot. In all the years hence, I have yet to see a 'wave' that even came close to this one.
I recently did a little more work on the image, and, since the large version is not currently part of my 'gallery', I decided to post it.

18 commentsThe rare chance of experiencing this sort of convergence of light, weather and land is why I keep going back into the field.
