Black and White Owl

This owl species is pretty reliable at the lodge we always stay out just outside of Mindo, Ecuador.  They hang out under the lights in the parking lot.  The lights attract a lot of large moths which the owls eat, occasionally they take a bat as well.

Canon 5D3, Sigma 150-600 at 361mm 1/15 F6.3, iso 2500, Gitzo tripod, Wimberley head, cropped to vertical.

What a cool looking owl, Nate.  I love that striped plumage.  Excellent image quality, particularly for a flashless owl.  Did you do any kind of color temperature compensation for whatever kind of lights they have in the parking lot?  There seems to be a slight purple color cast.

Very nice shot for the very low light. I agree with Dennis on the purplish tint.

Thanks Pramod, it's a good sized owl about 16-17 inches or 40 centimeters.

New species for me. I also agree about the tent, but nice capture regardless.

Cool shot of a very neat owl.  I have to go back to Ecuador one of these days.  I missed out on this owl last time.

I won't mention the purplish cast; enlightened looks like you caught the owl in its jammies. For some reason this tickled my funny bone.blush

Well done considering the light.  I am guessing the light was fluorescent  or sodium vapor which would account for your color balance issues.
