Enlightened Thorsmork

Some strong sunrise lighting around 3AM near Thorsmork Iceland and a little fresh snow on the distant peaks to boot.  The water action was the real draw for me, especially with the strong side lighting.  I am having some issues with direction of the water across the frame, parallel with the shore line and near horizon.  I am wondering if a viewer has any issues with this, somewhat static for me. I chose the distant rocky shore to set the horizon, since the river was naturallly going down hill, and the green hill side was angled in the opposite direction.  So, my chosen horizon was a bit of a compromise.  Does it look off?  ANy issues with web sharpening?  I think I might start using the reading glasses for the computer.  Ugh!

Harry: I really like your POV and your horizon choice works for me. Nice SS choice as well. 2 thumbs up. >=))>

Horzion looks fine to me, no unnatural sight! Indeed all the horizontal lines make this a bit of a static photo, but I feel that the water adds some dynamic to the photo which compensates for it. The structure in the water is what makes this photo for me. Sharpening looks good to me.

I think this works very nicely, Harry. The sharpening looks good to me. I really like the layers in the image along with the drama in the water which is repeated in the sky. My only suggestion; and this is a very minor one; would be to burn down the highlights along the shoreline on the right side. You came away with some great stuff from your Iceland trip.

The light is nice, there are a lot of elements in the scene to keep the eye moving and the sky is dynamic. This is probably just personal preference, but I am struggling with the composition and I am not sure why. Maybe it is the smaller image that makes the water to dominate. The larger image I get the feeling of looking over the water at the mountains and that works better for me.

I'm starting to get a sense of your processing order, Harry.  Aerial and glacier, then mountain and snow, and now I see a dozen spectacular water-related images.  I still think you were there for a year!  laugh

I don't see any sharpening issues, and the horizon looks fine to me.  I do think you could trim just a tish off the top (just below the roundish, bright center cloud.  That would move the horizon a little and draw our eyes into the more interesting patches of blue in the sky.  It also invited the eye to explore the water longer (long enough to hold one's breath, in fact).

Beautiful light and composition. I think the dynamics of the first floor as opposed to the static background creates a nice effect that makes the picture interesting. Well done.

Harry,

This is unique and wonderful.  The issues you site don't bother me in the least.  In fact, there is a tremendous dynamic here that makes me feel literall pulled in to the raging water - or another thought is if I was riding upstream in this torrent in one of those power boats.  This does NOT feel static to me at all.

No issues really with sharpening, especially the water.  If anything, perhaps in the distant midground.  but mountains and sky look spot on.  I wouldn't have thought to mention if you hadn't asked.. ;-)

I think this works wonderfully!  Dynamic, movement... you've really captured almost a living photograph - (just made that up, can't say I've ever heard that term before.)  This is well done and executed.

No nits from me. I love the range of tones, the deep view, fantastic sky and of course the raging river.

I really like the image and parallel lines look fine. The horizon throws me off a bit, I would favor a CCW rotation, maybe 0.5? Strong image that really needs to be viewed large.

Harry,
This is beautiful. The shutter speed selected really accentuates the power of the river.

From my point of view this is a little oversharpened, a bit too crisp. That's based upon the rocks and the green hills behind them.
