On the Edge (Vertical)

Greetings once again from a VERY blustery and wintery SW Alberta this morning. Yikes.

Took the time to do a quick edit on a vertical version of the horizontal I posted earlier this week here. This is a different image (I almost ALWAYS shoot both verticals and horizontals of every subject that allows me such luxury), and is 97% of full frame with just a sliver trimmed from the top and left side to eliminate a black edge.

I welcome your comments and critiques along with which format you prefer.

Please note that we photographed this scene with everything from 300mm to 750mm equivalent, so rather than crop this frame further, we certainly have a full-frame version at various stages of owl size in the frame. I know Jenaya and Josiah will be posting some of their closer images soon.

Thanks in advance...

John,

I like this typ of images that show also the habitat of the animal. I have not seen the horizontal before and have done this by the link provided. I like the horizontal better enlightened

P.S. An idea for this image would be to crop more at the left hand site to a type of vertikal panoramic photo ...

Wonderful image John, for the the amount of surrounding spaces works very well. Personally I like the vertical (this) image better than the other. Hats off, great work devil, cheers, hans

I like this better than the horizontal image.  Feels more balanced to me.  Nicely done.

I do prefer this slightly over the landscape image, John.  I think this might be even more effective if it were cropped from the top to a 4x5 ratio (but then I usually find the portrait aspect ratio to be too tall for my taste).

I too think this is better balanced than the landscape version. I think the addition amount of green leaves helps the composition.

Excellent work John on this version also, its a great day for a wildlife photographer when a great subject is so co-operative in such a wonderful environment. Both are powerful images. Looking forward to seeing Jenaya & Josiah's photos of this beauty.

What I like here is how the bird is so visually integrated into its environment.  And the way the foliage echoes the grass.  Well done.
