Salmon Supper

A Sea Lion feasting on spawning salmon at Valdez, Alaska.  The best indicator for catching the action is the seagulls.  With their vertical veiw they can see the sea lions under the water and flock around them, waiting for them to burst to the surface and leave scraps.

Sony ILCE-6000 (a6000), FE 70-200 F4 G @ 200mm, ISO-100, f4.0, 1/400

Gary, this is an excellent catch of the action, definitely wow on the timing, with great details in the sea lion's head as well as the fish.

Awesome action - love those sharp teeth and the splash coming from the fish.

It looks a little overexposed on this monitor (not the best gauge)- I would probably try so selective exposure adjustments on the water and fish

Gary: an excellent capture of the action at the peak moment. It's a treat to be able to see the whole fish, as well as the entire head of the sea lion and that large eye. I can't recall ever seeing a sea lion engageing in this type of behavior. Richard

Nicely done, Gary.  I really appreciate your background story of seagulls anticipating the action, which pulls us into the greater experience.  Thanks!

Hi Gary,

Nice "active portrait"! Sea lions are among my favourite subjects...and as one who has photographed them a lot I can relate to how tough it can be to shoot them. If this shot was mine I'd experiment with bringing back just slightly more shadow detail from a few regions on the sea lion.

Thanks for sharing this one...
