Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon in southern Iceland. These icebergs break off a glacier and float in this lagoon for a while, until they have molten enough to be sufficiently small to move through the outlet into the sea. I was thrilled to see the diversity of sizes and shapes of the icebergs as they were floating around the lagoon, lit by the evening sun.

7 commentsThis is actually quite abstract in a certain sense. Some parts of it look like a layered cake. There is nice interplay of the sunlight and the cloudy areas. I might clone away the birds as they detract a little for me but it just depends on your philosophy. I didn't have time to go there but will make it on the next trip to Iceland. Nice image overall.
Very interesting image. I especially like the 2/3rds of the image from the bottom left corner. The tonal range in that area is particularly rich. I actually like the birds and do not find them distracting. The light is very pleasant on these icebergs. I usually don't like to give nitpicky suggestions but the small light at the top of the frame. Is it better with it or cropped out? In a way I like it because it prevents the sky from being monotonal but perhaps a bit more light would have been nice. I don't know.
I love the dark background sky on this as it keeps the eye drawn toward the sidelit icebergs. The flying birds are also a nice touch that add some life to the scene. Great work.
I like this a lot, Basil. The depth of field, tonality, and color looks very nice. At first, I thought the birds were dust bunnies. You might think about cloning the bird above the large berg. Very nice image.

Hi Basil, I wonderful location - I know there are always lots of photographers here but there are so many motif opportunities that it really doesn't matter. Your shot is really a different take and i like that! You've put a nice foreground 'frame' to the image. I would clone the birds in this case - if they were a bit bigger then i would have left them. But where I think the image could really gain and in order to really emphasise the wonderful light you have captured on the ice, would be to pull back (darken) the top sky / clouds - the slight break through of the light at the very top begs for a much wider lens, since you get the feeling you are 'just missing something' ... Either a slight crop top and left + darken the sky (but not the tip of the iceberg
) or leave as is and darken (and desaturate) the top middle of the image to match more closley the brightness of the top leftr and right corners ... All in all, nice shot!
Cheers, Mark
Thank you all for commenting. It is clear that the two main issues here are the sky and the birds. I like the birds in there, as they give this some sense of scale. I'll think about cloning out the one above the iceberg, as it is rather blurry. Second thing is that I may consider cropping the sky a bit (obtaining a slightly widish format), as not all that much is happening in the uppormost quarter of the frame.
Thanks a lot!
Nice combination of warm and cool. Good to see a telephoto persepctive of this popular location.
