Here's another from my archive that I recently scanned and processed. It's from the summer of 2010 during a trip to the Sonora Pass country with other CA NPN members.
I have made many images of this particular waterfall over the years, and this is among a few favorites.

10 commentsWhat an amazing spot, I see many photos inside of this one! The color and texture on the rocks hold my atttention, as does the flowing water. I'm not sure the upper 1/3 of the frame contributes much, but this comp doesn't feel right without it either.
Excellent capture, thanks for sharing!
Good one, Preston, beautiful spot; greens look a little over saturated to me.
Boy there is nothing like Sierra granite. And nothing does it justice like a medium format camera. I'm pretty sure I know this spot. The water looks very natural despite what appears to be a fairly slow shutter speed. The greens in the true seem a bit too saturated and too much cyanic (is there such a word?). I don't know how you feel about sky wedges like that. I try to avoid them when possible. I think you can get a nice composition without the mountain, cropped to include just a portion of the lower foliage.
Hi Preston, for me spot on for shutter speed and colour rendition of the water - nice shot! I would agree with Igor and go with a crop losing the sky triangle , it does tend to drag the eye away from the water, but perhaps leaving the dead brown tree complete ...
Cheers, Mark
I spent a summer living in Angel's Camp and working as a river guide on the Stanislaus, American, and Tuolemne (before the New Melones Dam) and made several hiking trips to Sonora Pass including Double Falls. This brings back memories. I really like this image Preston. The comp and framing here elicit the Sierra to me. I think it could be a tiny bit lighter to bring out the details in the darker areas. But overall, a superb shot.
Thanks for your comments, everyone!
I liked the crop idea to eliminate the wedge of sky to draw the view to the falls. I also reduced the cyan/green saturation.
Any thoughts on this version?
@David: Well, if you were ever in Columbia or Sonora, we likely passed each other on the street. Small world. I looked at bringing up any detail in those dark areas, but it wound up being noisy looking, so decided to leave those areas alone. I appreciate the suggestion!

I like the repost. I might bring up the mids a bit. Otherwise, looks good to me.
The spot looks vaguely familiar.
I prefer the repost. The granite textures contrasting with flowing water is terrific.
The action in the falling water is great, Preston, and I'm thoroughly enjoying that "nose" of stone in the middle. I could see cropping a bit more than half of the ridge above the falls, but as Jim suggests, that would be a very different image. Having just scrolled down and finding the repost. It takes care of my nits, very well. I really like how it emphasizes the water motion...it puts me right there, listening to the rush.
Preston, This is a wonderful shot and I'm totally enjoying it. I really like the repost without the corner of sky which was my very first thought when I viewed this...so the repost nails it for me. Excellent work!
