UT-24 Highway scene

Hi, I'm an amateur photographer from Brazil. This shot was in 2011 when I had just bought my Canon EOS 60D. It's an old pic but the day traveling from Bryce Canyon NP to Arches NP was unforgiven. So many stops to shoot that this one was taken at sunset just after the Capitol Reef NP (mid of the way...). Wish I can go back soon and spend much more time there.

All C&C are welcome.

Canon EOS 60D
EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
ƒ/5.0 (crazy aperture, today I'd use up to f/11)
44.0 mm 1/40

Welcome to NPN Lucinei. The scene shows the scale of the rock wall by including the tree and the foreground. Very pleasing to view. I look forward to you next post..

Welcome to NPN Lucinei. You've picked a great subject for your first post. Many of the more advanced photographers here have made some great images shooting those eroded cliffs. Aside from the general picture I like those dark thistles scattered throughout the grassy area. They add interest to that layer of your composition.

Awesome patterns in the rocks, and I like the tree as an anchoring point. My only suggestion would be cropping out the patch of air, but this is very nice as is!

Welcome to NPN, Lucinei. I'm really enjoying the contrast between the grassy field plus tree against those wonderfully sharp eroded cliffs behind. With this size view, I can't see that anything is going soft due to using f/5. This is a good look at both this field and the eroded cliffs. I've made that Arches to Bryce trip in a day and it's a lot of driving through some wonderful scenery. Yes, the bit of sky would be much nicer were it a darker blue and this might work well if it were cropped out, but I think having that band of darker stone show near the top is important.

Welcome to NPN, Lucinei. That area along Utah 24 is a favorite destination for me. I agree that the sky is not doing it any favors, but maybe panning left and zooming in a bit to crop some of the foreground would have more impact.

Thanks for all the comments! Really appreciate and agree with them. I had some difficult to crop the image and dont lose important parts of it. So, I've tryed to fill that bright area by clonning... What do you think about that?

Hi, welcome!
I like the subject and how you composed it. The light and colors are particularly nice.
I also agree with the others to remove the white sky. Your re-work solves the problem, but the cloning work almost looks like a sky pasted into the image.

I agree that the patch of sky is a bit too bright, but I don't think that the cloning solution is an improvement - I'd keep the original, which has some good strengths, in the composition and color palette. And welcome to NPN!! :toast:

Your reworked image is much stronger image. the bright sky drew my eye to it. Nice color and the tree adds a nice anchor point to the image

Lucinei: Welcome to NPN and thanks for a fine first post. Really nice light and I like your comp. My only suggestion would be to crop to about 5:4 from the right edge to eliminate the small corner of sky and completely fill the frame with the hillside. Great to have you aboard and looking forward to more. >=))>

Welcome aboard, Lucinie. I've driven by and photographed this scene many times and I never grow tired of it. One of my favorite places in the world. Crop from the right to lose the sky and you have winner. Looking forward to more. :wavey:
