Pea Soup

Out playing in some very thick fog on the coast near home. I struggled with the subtle details in this scene so I'm interested to see what others think of this. There was some not pretty rocks to the right so I shot this fairly tight to the point.

I was going to ask why so tight, and then read your description. I think it works nonetheless, thanks to the strong vertical emphasis given by the trees and cliffs. And the foggy light is simply marvelous!!

A lovely, moody shot. Just for grins, if it were mine, I might play with the bit of yellow on the foreground cliff and rocks.

Nice mood but cutting part of tree left frame a small nit. :toast:

Great mood. The composition makes the fog the star.

Bill, I love scenes like this!...and this one is really nice! You explained the tighter comp and I think that was probably a good decision because this works great just as is. The mood just doesn't get any better and your large version puts me right there! Really nice work!

Definitely captures as feeling as much as it captures the light. The layering here is very nice.

Bill, the fog fills the mood aspect, but the composition works extremely well from this perspective too. Along with the fog the light really adds to the serene and calmness of the image.
I guess the only thing I feel cheated on is our monitors don't do a good job on verticals without having to scroll so much. Maybe we need square monitors....

I definitely agree on the title, Bill. Just had a morning like this in Florida and I'm working on how to show it. I sure do like the ridges disappearing into the soup. I think I'd like this somewhat brighter as that would be more inviting, but that's a personal preference since I like wandering around in heavy fog.

You really captured the mood of a typical misty day at the coast Bill! Apart from a dust bunny I can't see anything wrong with this photo. The warm colors on the rocks are splendid if you ask me. Good job!

Interesting choice to leave everything that dark Bill. I think it captures the mood nicely.

The comp works perfectly for me. My first thought was that I would like to see more on the right, but then I wondered if that would have made too much empty space, throwing the balance off. Then I read your description, so I don't think you sacrificed anything at all by framing it this way. My second thought was that if I were next to you shooting this, I would have made it too bright. So you taught me a lesson even though I was not there. The subtle details look to me to be absolutely perfect -- plainly visible, but still subtle and very natural. This one's a keeper.
