Granite Fire

From the Silver Fork of the American River around 7,000 feet last summer although given the ongoing lack of snow it probably looks about the same right now in the middle of winter. The bottom half might be a bit dark but it was quite a bit after sunset so the light feels right to me.

f/18, 1/6 sec, ISO-200, 18mm, 0.6 GND.

I would have bet this was Olmsted Pt until I read your description. The sky is amazing and the texture of the central rock and bedrock is really great. This area, however, has some unatural warm tones for granite which I think were introduced during processing when the clouds were warmed up. I think it could be improved by reducing these hues.

It's really interesting how those fiery clouds seem to reach right out of the mountain top. The composition works well for me.

The composition works well for me, but I would like to see some more detail in the foreground, it's a bit too dark for me. There are some dust bunnies at the top part btw.

Beautiful sky, Dave. It does appear to be on fire. Given the lack of snow and moisture I hope a real fire is not next on the agenda. Aside from the few dust bunnies, I like it.

The dark rocks look fine to me too - good setting for the gorgeous sky!

Another so fascinating image......I'm new on this site and i'm really happy to find so many images matching my tastes....
The weight of the rock and the extension of the clouds: perfectly captured theme, by both composition (masses distribution) and chromatic point of view.
All the best,

I also thought it was Olmsted! Funny. Real nice sky. I would not mind a little more room on the sides, but looks good as presented.

Great clouds and nice composition. I would also like to see the foreground brightened to bring out more detail.

Beautiful light in that sunset. I like your framing of this image to showcase that sunset. It might be worth working a little with the luminosity to create some separation between the foreground rock and the background mountain.

Thanks as always for all your comments.
Here's a repost with the bunnies addressed and a brighter rock per Brian's suggestion.

Dave, This is very nice. Pretty amazing how the first thing you thing of if fire just from the light and clouds. I think your comp works well and I like the feel of the original version a little better over the repost. Nice capture Dave!

Sorry that I'm so late to comment on the repost. I prefer the repost since it definitely creates more tonal separation between the foreground / background. I still might be tempted to further lighten the darkest parts on the top of the rock, but that's a matter of preference. You wouldn't need to lighten them too much, but it might help to brighten them just a little.
