On A Winter Walk

by Nick Bristol

I made this picture last year on a wonderfully quiet winter morning in March. With a light mist and fog over the snow it was so peaceful and quiet. These oak leaves managed to hang on all winter long and I liked the contrast with the pines and fog. Larger view works much better I think. As always thanks for any thoughts you might have.

Beautiful, Nick. What would we do with out marcescent young oaks and beaches? Colors that look drab the rest of the year get to show off their beauty when the rest of the forest's leaves disappear. Your capture of the dark pattern of the pines fading into the misty background is interesting on its own, and makes a wonderful background for the sunlit oak leaves. I do have one small nit, and that's that I wish there were another little bit of space between the lowest oak leaves and the bottom of the frame.

I am always impressed by the quiet beauty you discover in weather that would make many people look for indoor activities.

Wayne, Thank you very much. I'm happy you saw the beauty in this because my feelings were just what your's are. I love days that keep alot of other people indoors! I agree about a bit more room below the oak leaves on the bottom. I do have it with a little more room on another exposure that i actually used for a print. Not sure why I used this one for the web version. Probably a late night mistake when I got it ready. Nick

Wonderful take here, Nick. I think this might be one of my favorites of yours. Love the light hitting the oak leaves. It sure has a bit of a unique look from some of your most recent posts as I recall. Apparently you've already made a print from a similar take and can only imagine it making a wonderful wall hanger.
Like Wayne I thought a bit more room at the bottom would be the only thought, and that seems to have been addressed by your other image on hand.

Nick, you have created an image from something I would have walked right by. The light and the fog makes this really work. Well seen and photographed.

I like this a lot, Nick. The colors and shapes form natural layers that give this depth in spite of the soft light. The "more room at the bottom" theme has been thoroughly covered.

Nick, these oak leaves do look great set against the pine trunks fading into the fog. I like the split image sense of strong attention on the leaves surrounded by moody atmospherics. I agree that it looks like a fine time to be out exploring.

Nick,

This is a beautiful portrait of an Oak tree. I love how these trees hang onto their leaves all winter. They leaves can provide so much beauty during a cold winter, and you have captured such a sweet artistic image. You have framed this up to give the viewer so much depth on the right.

Wonderful work

The warmth of the leaves against the foggy bg is comforting. I like this simple scene with it's serenity and solitude.

I really like the round spots of lichen on the background tree trunks. They are a feature that really enhances the scene, like a mole on a supermodel's face

Like this a lot, I hadn't heard the term marcessence until around a year ago we get beech trees that do the same thing. Love the autumn copper combined with the sombre misty verticals of the trees beyond.

Very nice combination of colors and shapes here. The fog adds a nice element too! I agree with Wayne about having a little more room at the bottom.
