This is of course the Great White Throne as seen from the Virgin River at the Big Bend in Zion Canyon. The dynamic range within this scene is about three stops. But the scene does not lend itself to the use of graduated neutral density filters. This composition represents one of my rare attempts to manually merge multiple exposures into a single image. Three exposures were manually merged, one for the Virgin River and the cliffs in the foreground, one for the Great White Throne and one for the sky. My technique may be far from perfect, and I did this on my notebook computer, so it may need to be reworked or at least tweaked when I get home.

Canon 5D II
Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II
25mm, f/22, 1.3 seconds and 0.3 second and 1/6 second, ISO 50, polarizer

Like the comp--needs a tad more contrast i think. :wavey:

Jim, this is great. Great scene, great comp, great elements, and worth the effort to try the exposure blending. I don't see any issues with the blend transitions, but I might darken the darks on the red sandstone cliffs, and see if you can work a little more contrast into the Throne and sky. :toast:

Nice job on this, Jim. Notoriously difficult, at least for me, to photograph the Great White Throne. I agree that you could pump this up a bit more, but I like what you have here.

Really nice job on this Jim and a view I've never seen before. I think it could use a bit more contrast but a very nice job on your blend. Well done.

Well, it's not a familiar view to me, so I am happy to see it, especially done so well. I have seen many scenes that have become so commonplace that I wonder if everyone is using some kind of public tripod, but this is not one of them, so I think it deserves a better title. ... and that's my only nit.
