Standing Rock

From the Land of Standing Rocks in the Maze district of Canyonlands NP. The destination for sunset on this evening was supposed to be the Dollhouse, but the road was slower than anticipated and this light show started happening, so I scrambled to find the best comp I could from this location. I wish the bush in the middle wasn't there, but it was too big to clone out. Pushed forward to the Dollhouse in the dark (with good headlights and spotters for the tricky areas).

A 2-exposure blend for dynamic range, with some TK masks/actions and other minor refinements. F/8.0, 24mm, .3 sec (base image), ISO 100. Unfiltered C&C much appreciated!

That's some seriously good light Jared! This has a real Maxfield Parrish feel to it. I see some slight haloing around the standing rock, but that's very minor. Stellar image overall...

The bush is little distracting, but it's OK for me. I like the details. There appears to be a very thin halo around the main rock and the smaller one to its left. The rock looks great and I really like that sky. Nicely done!

Nice work Jared! I like this scene and you certainly caught some wonderful light along with a great sky. I might prefer it without that bush as you mentioned but still it works fine as is for me.

The sky is killer.....
I might lighten and add some contrast to the FG.
Very nice light you had.

I like the different elements here, the strong sunset colors and the lightness in the sky. Well done

Amazing sky and the comp works fine. This is really a great impromptu shot with rapidly changing light.

That's a great sky with a wonderful range of colors. The shrub doesn't bother me, because it's dark enough to not grab a lot of attention and it fits well with the surroundings. You've also got a good brightness balance between the foreground and sky.

I think this is a fantastic image. I spent a week backpacking in the Maze a few years ago, and it a beautiful and somewhat challenging place for photography. This is one of the best shots of the Land of Standing Rocks that I can recall seeing.

I was really attracted to the sky and clouds. A sky we dream about. Almost looks like it was over sharpened or too tightly selected in some way, especially the central high clouds. Hard to describe, maybe just the way the light was hitting the cloud. A little busy regarding the comp. I say you did a great job under the gun. :toast:

Great light , on the run, Jared. I find myself panicking some in these situations. New area, light changing fast, gotta find a comp  Wish I could pull it off like this. Very nice. BTW, the print I ordered arrived and is awesome. :wavey:

I can see why you dashed; lovely sky color and cloud patterns. The foreground doesn't engage as much as many of your other shots, but it still supports nicely, and the bush doesn't bug me much.
