While the volcano was not actively erupting while we were there, a night walk to the closest observation areas produced nice silhouetted trees against the gases and lava in the crater, and the distant hot rim.

Beautiful silhouette with a striking background.

I might do a tiny bit of cloning to get separation of the main tree from bushes?

Nice!! I think the contrast in the repost is a big improvement--however you do lose some of the subtle detail in the mist just left of the tree--maybe you could blend it back in

cool shot.
