The Luckiest Sea Turtle

Swimming lazily in a calm tide pool beneath a colorful Hawaiian sunset, a sea turtle pokes its head up for air. I've honestly never seen a sea turtle that was so relaxed. He let me get within a couple feet of him without a care in the world. What a life.

I've also never had the good fortune of finding a wild sea turtle in a pool of water that was perfectly calm. I've seen many, many sea turtles all over Hawaii and the Caribbean, but none in such a photogenic setting. The still water allowed me compositions that, for me at least, were never possible before.

Very nice find Kory. I really like the dark water and the way the turtle is clearly visible just below the surface. There are some very nice colours from that sunset as well. It helps to include your shooting details to better understand and critique the photo. This has a wide angle look to it, there seems to be some curvature of the water's surface but not sure if it is lens related or just the perspective. Did you use a polarizer? It is your choice to include a larger view (1200 pix longest side) or not, but it is an option that really helps to better appreciate the photo in most cases.

Gary, no I didn't use a polarizer because I wanted the reflection to show. The EXIF data is: 1/60, f/6.3, 70mm, ISO 400, handheld The curvature on the water is just ripples from the turtle moving around.

I tried adding a bigger file for you, but this forum doesn't let one upload a bigger version after the initial post was made, which is a bummer.

I think the colors and patterns in the reflected sky work pretty well to create an abstract, though the dark upper right corner is unfortunate. Must've been a wonderful encounter to see the turtle up close and relaxed.

^^ Good eye, Max. I agree about the URC, but cloning it out is impossible.

BTW, iff anyone want's to see a larger version, look here: http://500px.com/photo/64096493

Kory,

This is remarkable, I looked at the large version and wish it was larger

Very interesting and cool photo, Kory! I find the black triangle in the urc to be distracting. I would consider using some content aware cloning to take care of that. A minor nit on presentation: the black frame blends with the dark borders in the image, which is distracting to me - a lighter border or line around the image would work better IMO

Doug, if you can get content aware to clone that spot out convincingly, I'd jump for joy. I find it to be impossible to do it without it looking fake.
