Gotta Be a Better Way.........

.....to get a decent meal.

I took this early yesterday evening in Kananaskis Country on my way back to Canmore. She had a calf with her but the calf didn't want anything to do with me and ran into the bush as soon as I got out of my vehicle and watched me from a ways off in the trees. Mama on the other hand didn't seem too concerned and let me take dozens of images of her for quite a long while from as close as 40 feet. Every now and then she would peek up at her calf as if to say "what's your problem he's harmless". Eventually a couple of other vehicles came but she still seemed fairly relaxed around people. Thankfully no one jumped out and charged her with a camera like I had happen a couple of times earlier in the week while trying to get some wildlife images. Not sure why people think running at an animal while laughing and making a lot of noise would do anything other than scare them a way but seems to happen all the time.

Watching her for quite awhile reminded me of what a harsh life these animals have. The snow was nearly up to her belly and she was burning a lot of calories just trying to get a meal struggling with those branches. Thanks for looking and your comments are appreciated.

I absolutely love this image. The "expression" on her face is priceless. The very nice details, best appreciated on the larger version, make me feel intimate with the subject. The fur detail, and we can even see that she hasn't flossed in a while! Great technicals as far as I can see; nice comp; and of course the behavior of mid-bite is terrific... makes me chuckle to look at it. Nice work all around.

Excellent capture. The exposure is dead on and the detail in the large view is just super. :toast:

Really good look at moose browsing behaviour. The open mouth with pink tongue and the bent over willow are excellent. Wouldn't change a thing personally. I completely agree with you about the strange behaviour some people exhibit when they spot some wildlife, truly baffling. Last winter I heard a couple of young guys describing how one of them jumped on the back of an elk in Jasper just for fun.

Carey,
Apart from the quality of this image, what makes this for me is the expression
I have the same problem with "others" in Africa, but unfortunately they do not jump out of the vehicle

Thank you for your comments everyone. Gary, That guy in Jasper is very lucky he is around to tell the story. I heard a similar story a few years ago of a tourist placing his son on top of a black bear to get a picture and the two of them got severely mauled.
