Backyard nemesis

This is Herbert, my backyard buddy/nemesis. I felt he needed a name since he's always hanging upside down on my bird feeder. After many threats of bodily harm he realized that I'm really never gonna hurt him so now it's just a fun game. He jumps down and then taunts me to no end. At least he does pose for portraits. Along with the usual House sparrows and Juncos we are finally seeing visits from Cardinals, Woodpeckers and Blue jays within this last week.

Nice looking fluffy tailed "rat". Is that his "Who, me?" pose?

He has a nice coat, good coloration and is definitely well fed  Pose is good and the basic techs look fine. The larger image looks like it could tolerate another round of sharpening. Do you use the sharpening tool in Photoshop? If you haven't, it tends to be buried under the blur tool. Set it for Luminostiy blend mode and dial the opacity back to about 15%. If you have CS5 or later look at the controls for the tool along the top and make sure that the "Protect Detail" feature is checked on. Then size the brush and paint in the added sharpening only where you need it (face, eyes, etc.) it works like a charm and is the way to do selective sharpening without complex masking.

Pleased to meet you Herbert. I think I have some of your freeloading relatives at my place! A couple of years ago a couple of you got into the inner walls of my house, had to cut some drywall to place a live trap - still haven't forgot about that! Very nice coat, I guess John buys the expensive bird seed... :roll eyes: I might have shot this wide open to soften the background a little more; Herby is broadside so I don't think you need much dof here.

Thanks for the sharpening tips Rick. I've just started using PS CC recently and so am still overwhelmed by all the different ways of doing things. To date I've mostly been playing with copying selections to layers and using the sharpening filters, I'll have to try that technique. :toast:

Nice pose and pleasing image John. I agree with Gary's suggestion on the DOF next time, but being such a uniform BG, it doesn't really detract form the image.
