Bighorn Silhouette

A male Desert Bighorn Sheep framed through sun-lit Juniper branches in southern Utah. I found this individual by following the loud cracking sounds of his contest with another male, which took me high up and far back in the icy slickrock. Before I saw them, one of the males charged over the hill and ran at me full tilt, like he planned to ram me off the mountainside. When he was about 50 feet away he spotted me and ran by in a wide arc, so I assumed he had lost and was just beating a hasty retreat. When I topped the hill I saw the winning male and his female companion, and decided to try shooting them through the thick branches of a juniper. The morning sun was just to the left of them, so I cupped my hand on the edge of the lens to block it a bit, though the needles all around me caught the light also and add some interesting texture to the photo in my opinion. C&C much appreciated.

Canon 5d Mark iii, 300mm f/4 lens, 1/500 sec at f/4, ISO 250, handheld

Thomas,

To be totally honest I am not really sure about this one, but on balance I think it works. One thing for certain it is certainly different :toast: :toast:

I like this. I would remove a portion of the top, if what we are seeing is full frame. A 4x5 ratio will put the ram close to the standard but magical rule of thirds, and it will serve to emphasize the diagonals. Sharpening seems to have left a halo on the ram, so I would scale that back until it is clean. I think you will be left with a powerful capture that will invite viewers to look more than once!

I agree with Lon about the sharpening on the ram, it is quite noticeable. I like the mood created by the composition and the interesting oof areas above. The crescent shaped highlights are reminiscent of the shape of the ram's horns, so pretty cool how that worked out - suggestive of a phantom herd of sheep. Keep doing this alternative creative stuff, it's unique and very interesting!

Looks like it is peeking into a cave or something. This is a really nice surrealistic shot with a sharp outline in just the right spot and soft highlights all around the rim. What an interesting photo. Nicely done Thomas.

Thanks for the feedback you all. Lon and Gary, I didn't sharpen the image much at all, and what looks like haloing around the ram is I think just it's fur backlit by the sun, which I was blocking with my hand because it was just outside of the frame on the left. In any case, I see what you mean and I'll see what I can do about it. I agree about the crop Lon, it does look better.

Thomas, fantastic image. I really don't think you need to change a thing. I recognized the backlight on the ram for what it is, rather than sharpening, and the top portion of the image lends to it's overall mysterious aesthetic. Maybe a very small crop there, but that's personal choice and not one that'll make or break with this image does. Nothing competes, IMO, with the ram's silhouette, which is placed nicely within the image overall. I think this a really special image.
