A Touch of Gold

Zion Canyon

True ... the autumn colors were very early this year in Zion. This photograph was taken on November 2nd in lower Zion Canyon, where most of the smaller cottonwoods had already turned and lost their leaves, and most of the larger cottonwoods were already turning. Typically on this date the larger cottonwoods would still be mostly green and only the smaller cottonwoods would be turning. But I've still enjoyed finding many good autumn compositions in Zion Canyon, and even today there is some good color remaining.

Jim, to me what makes this photograph very nice is how the green and yellow complement each other. The red rock in the background adds a nice touch, too. Some of the greens in the foreground don't look natural to me, though. But, perhaps those were the colors as you saw them.

Hi Jim,

A nice late-autumn feeling to your photo. I like the combination of colours and the fact, that you find a composition with just enough yellow not to scream out of the screen. As Randy said, some of the green paches between the trees are a bit over saturated.

Cheers,
Marko

Very pretty Jim a wonderful mix of colours the green looks a tiny bit acidic and I might be tempted to de-saturate it slightly but otherwise lovely. PS I just read the other comments I had the same thoughts independant of the others.

Beautiful scene Jim with wonderful details in the larger version. Really like the grey tones in this and the back round rock colors. Greens mentioned by others. Really nice image.

This makes for a very nice ZNP capture, Jim. Having been to this park myself more times then any other for me it has a very classic look of the park, but still a bit of a unique capture from this area. Very nice indeed.

Beautiful classic Zion scene! I would echo the previous comments on the greens, but excellent image! I really like the slightly late, partially bare tree look. It works for me. More impact with the feel of the coming winter.

A very nice look for me and I think the colors, though maybe a bit unnatural, look attractive.

The colors are terrific and the red rocks in the background really set off the tree colors well.

An outstanding image. Atypical for NPN but the raw beauty is captivating.

I think you nailed the white balance in this image Jim. It's cool in the right ways and warm in the right places. Nicely done.

Another excellent comp, and the color is, again, naturally beautiful. Eliot Porter would have loved this one.
