Black-shouldered Kite

Another one from Australia. We spent several days on the Atherton Tablelands, three of them at a lovely B&B near Atherton with the irresistible name of Barking Owl Retreat. They were harvesting and plowing in the area, drawing in large numbers of Kites to scavenge and Cranes to glean the fields. I'd actually gone out in the early morning in search of cranes (to no avail), but ran across numerous kites on fence posts, a few of which were cooperative.

7D, 500 mm f4 + 1.4TC, hand held (propped on car windowsill), f5.6, 1/8000, iso 500 (I probably should have gone for more dof, since I had more than enough light). Av mode with no compensation. Processed in CS6 and cropped to 9.4MP. Taken October 27th at 6:51 am.

Your comments and criticisms are most appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

I think f/5.6 worked out fine, but a tad more maybe..
I like the pose and that red eye, great details.
Well composed image Dennis, looking forward to more from down under :toast:

Very mic e as posted. We see a few in AZ but I haven't been able to get within range. I'd be very happy with this one.

Very sweet - I've never seen a kite at eye-level. Great pose, gorgeous eyes, and very fine detail.
Sounds like a great trip! Looking forward to more of your shots -

Dennis, Cool raptor, well captured. Consider cropping some on the right and cloning out the barbed wire. Thanks for posting, Dave
