Glowing Cauldron

Taken while on a early morning hike at Mount Saint Helens at sunrise in early summer. Hoping to break my cycle of clear or gray skies but that did not happen this year.

Large view much better. I wish this site did not have such a low restriction of 300kb for an image which is a little frustrating.

Tech Specs: I photographed this scene with a 3 stop GND something I don't use much these days but use when I have time and feel like it. Additional processing in PS with some luminosity masks, dodging, vibrance/saturation layers.

Canon 5D MKII, 17-40L @ 26, ISO 200, f/16 and 2 seconds.

Gorgeous light and comp Adrian. The reds look a little overcooked, but that's really minor. I think I know that spot. It's right near the visitor's center, correct?

Adrian: I'm a capture guy and like to spend as little time in Photoshop as possible so its nice to see someone using grad filters instead of software. Marvelous scene and comp and the light is just superb. I lived in Spokane when the mountain blew and we had about 1/2 -3/4 inch of ash in our yard for weeks. Top notch shot. >=))>

Clouds or no clouds, this is a nicely composed image. Great job of naturally balancing out the foreground and background light. The dead stump resonates well with the dead mountain.

Beautiful scenery from fore to aft. The stump is a remarkably good piece here as it reflects the old volcano in a fashion, as noted earlier. The kiss of light is especially nice. With some images, bare blue skies are hardly a liability, and such is the case here. 'Development' is nearly perfect, as well. Very fine work, Adrian!

I like the composition with the stump and wildflowers somewhat echoing the mountain and sunrise colors.

I love the greenery in the valley below, and the combination of colors is wonderful. Overall I think the colors come across as slightly over-saturated - I don't think you'd lose any impact if you took them down a notch.

Beautifully seen, with the great collection of flowers in the foreground and some neat light on the mountain.
