La Jolla, California

Exposed during low tide, this rock reminded me of an astroid of some sorts. When there was enough of a swell, the whitewash would come in and the rock would seem to drift out to sea. When I first processed this, I thought it would be a cool abstract without the sky, but I kept it in and purposely tried to keep the sky bright to match the whitewash, even thought the bright orange cloud seems to be a bit blown out.

Canon 5D2, Nikon 14-24. two exposure blend.

Well done Jimmy. Love the dynamic nature of the water - perfect shutter speed! Also love the pock-marked lead-in rock and how it points to the centered cloud.

I feel like I'm riding on the back of a whale! Great unique view here, Jimmy.

Jeffrey said it well, like riding on the back of a whale. It is a strange, but appealing viewpoint. Great understated sky, too.

That pock marked rock sticking into the frothing ocean is really neat and the colorful sky is icing on the cake. Very nice!

Never saw a view like this before Jimmy. Love the textures and water motion.

Cool viewpoint! You chose a great shutter speed for the water as well.

A couple of things I noticed: There seems to be some haloing at the horizon on the left, and there is also an odd oval shaped darker halo surrounding the orange cloud in the center of the sky. Easy fixes though, great shot!

This is really nice and I don't see a problem with the sky. The water does give the rock a sense of motion. Great colors, too. Well done.

Thanks Zack...I think the center dark halo is just a simple brush gone too big :) The halo on the left could be the incoming tide's mist. There were some nice swells this past weekend and at times, the mist/spray can fly all over the place. I plan on looking into it, though, to see if I can minimize the negative effect it may have.

Wow, dreamy. I only wish the land mass out there on the left was gone... :toast:

That's what I was saying, Mark. I actually get that little point in a lot of my shots, but really wish it were not so prominent in this one. I can always try to clone it out or partially crop and clone. May be a little much???

What an incredibly strong comp, Jimmy, and great light to go with it. Definitely worth leaving the sky in, IMO. The colors in the water texture makes this extra special.

I like your idea about cropping the sky, the image has more impact to my eye that way. Nicely seen.

Nice! That's a lot of white water, with nice detail and texture. The detail in the foreground rock is amazing. I especially like the puddles reflecting the blues of the sky. Excellent!

I like this a ton, Jimmy! Great comp and the foam gives it such a feel of no time or space. Excellent work. :toast:

Outstanding Jimmy! Great vision, concept and execution, I love this! I actually didn't think of a whale, but a surfboard with a very textured deck... ;-)

Love everything about this! Kudos! :toast:

Jimmy, This is a very cool shot! It is unusual and quite appealing to me. Beautiful colors and the water motion looks fantastic, and then all that detail and texture in the foreground rock just makes this a great looking image! The overall feel here is wonderful! Nice work! :toast:

This looks like the prow of some alien vessel! Very cool perspective.  I like the sky but a crop would really throw this into abstraction.

I like it better without the sky, more intimate with great balance in textures of rock and waves. It's also nice as is. an interesting capture

Beautiful shot, Jimmy, really like this comp!
No one else has mentioned it--so take this fwiw--but IMO i think this would be much stronger with some/most of the blue/magenta removed from the surf. Keep the warm colors there, but not the blue. As it stands, i think the blue in the water 'robs' the sky of some of its beauty. The texture is what makes the surf cool. Just a thought. :wavey:

Stan...when I first saw this on the monitor, the texture of the water was what I was drawn to, as it was in direct contrast to the sharp foreground. I envisioned this as a potential black and white abstract, but the cool color combo in the foreground and then the nice sky suggested color was the way to go. I definitely will play around with your suggestion a bit more, as it has a lot of merit, especially since that was kinda the way I was initially headed. Here is a quick edit.
