In The Cathedral

Thanks so much for the feedback on the previous photo. Its one of my favorite from this trip.

So I continued to wander the meadow just letting the light lead me around. I made a couple more exposures which did not turn out how I had envisioned, and then ended up in the Cathedral Grove of Black Oaks on the west end of the El Capitan meadow. For years I have brought workshop clients into that grove and pointed out interesting, or at least what I thought were interesting compositions. Most often the clients don't see it my way and try something else.

This year, not having any clients, I thought I would take my own advice finally and make this photo. Its not unique as a concept, and most probably not even as an actual photo. I think Michael Frye might have even done this, if I recall correctly, but I wanted to have a go at it and I think it has turned out to my liking.

What strikes me about this grove is how the oaks there arch overhead and toward each other forming an almost dome like structure that really does give the feeling of standing in a cathedral. However now its not a cathedral of Man's making in praise of the Creator, but one of the Creator for us to stand in and realize the greatness of what we have in the handiwork of the Creator. I hope that is not to religious for folks here, this place does bring me a sense of great awe.

4x5, Nikkor 75mm, f45, 1/4 sec, Fuji Provia 100F. Developed in CS5 with TK luminosity and saturation masks.

Youssef,

You're killing me! Now I hate making broad, best-ever kind of statements, but this got to be one of the best "looking-straight-up-in-to-a-canopy-of-tree" images I've seen! Every inch of the frame is filled an the design, well, just makes me speechless. This is an image where, if viewed large and from a distance creates an outstanding abstract. And when you get close, the details and light are glorious. Can't say enough about this.

You are teaching me more about this magical place.

Beautiful capture Youssef. Moments like this do have a way of bringing a great sense of awe, admiration, and respect for God's handiwork.

Fantastic movement. I may have seen one before with more colour...( wink)... but in terms of balance and movement...I'll give you the nod. :toast:

You image is definitely awe inspiring, evocative, and very beautiful Youssef. Those magnificent trees seem to be looking down at us in a good way.

Beautiful combination of blue and yellow and I like how the dark branches lead my eye to the center of the scene. Great work.

Very nice. I definitely get the cathedral sense here. It might be just me, but there a respectfulness in the trees themselves that images like this bring out. I guess it's probably natural, but big trees seen not to intrude into the space of other trees too much. While it would seen that there could be extensive overlap of their branches, it just isn't the case. The branches of one tree respect the branches of the neighboring tree. I have a mulberry and pear tree in my front yard that have exhibited this behavior for years. The pear tree has had to be hacked back from crowding my roof and rain gutters, but hasn't even touched the mulberry despite being only inches away from it for years. How do the branches know where the other branches are? It's a phenomenon I've seen with mature trees. They leave each other alone. Live and let live.

Absolutely fascinating. I love the whole effect this has on my eyes. No wonder they call it Cathedral Grove. It is a place to worsip the majesty of His creation for sure. This even has a stained glass effect in color and light. Superb work! :toast:

A subject that is chosen so many times but this is one of the best renditions I've seen so far.

Little late in commenting but have to say that this is the best 'canopy' image I've seen, Youssef. Love the dark graphic lines of the tree trunks and branches and that glowing foliage against the blue. I can only imagine how sore your neck got to be while focusing on the groundglass with the view camera pointing straight up. Beautifully done.
