This huge expanse of peaks is easily accessible along Austria's Grossglockner Alpine Road in Hohe Tauern National Park. I climbed a ridge to get the perspective of the valley leading toward the peaks. What really made me spend the time shooting this scene was the dappled sun light on the green valley hills. Years ago I was attracted to Kennan Ward's images of Alaska with dappled sun and snow on endless tundra and peaks. I try to photograph this kind of situation whenever possible. Sunrises and sunset are predictable and can be planned for - this kind of lighting and clouds is a bit hit or miss, but this day provided lots of opportunities in a magnificent setting. I realize it is a lot to look at - maybe too much?

Tighter shots of the scene were made as well.
I had hoped that hiking up the left ridge would improve the comp, but it ended up stacking the peaks together too much and some feeling of depth was lost, and the alpine road began to be visible. So I ended hiking back down the ridge to this vantage point.
5D MarkII, 17-40L, 10 vertical images @ f16 to allow some zoom and increased detail in the final 357 mbte file. Not sure what I will do with such a large image, but it's all there just in case I guess.

Very nice.
I passed this road only once with a camera in my car, on my way towards the south side to meet Andreas Resch. There are a few interesting places in that region. We went to the "Gradental".
Good work here again Harry!

Wonderful and expansive mountain landscape. Even the larger version only begins to do this justice, really.
I really like the curvature at the bottom framing the scene and containing the viewer's eye and directing them through the valley.
Well crafted.
