Alpine Idyllism
by Floris van Breugel
Last weekend I did a wonderful 4 day loop through the Alpine Lakes Wilderness backcountry with my girlfriend. One of our nights we spent by this beautiful alpine lake; just the perfect evening. No dramatic skies or flowers (in this picture), but for me it perfectly captures what I love about the alpine cascades. I'll be sharing a bunch more from the trip on my blog shortly.
Please do see the larger version too (I apologize for it not being as crisp as it should - file sizes started getting out of hand!).
Thanks for any thoughts!

I found the dark green trees and bushes (pretty in their own), as well as the gorgeous warm mountains, are competing for my attention. Crop the tree on the right (and also a little bit of the bottom), maybe?
Nancy / Harry - I see what you mean about the rock, and the crop would get rid of some of the tree on the right (which I'm not a huge fan of), but unfortunately it would throw off the balance of the mountain peaks.
Stuart / Harry - For maximum "pop", yes the mountains could stand a smidge more contrast, but I think that would reduce some of the depth. In normal conditions contrast drops off with distance, and in the 2D world of photography that contrast drop off is actually one of the best cues we have for distance, so I like to maintain a little haze out there.
Harry - I thought someone might suggest the trees were a little bright.. I was torn on it myself. I might try darkening them just a little. Thanks!
I made the long climb up there in autumn some years ago, for the larches, and had a week in a blizzarded tent for my reward. This is so much nicer than that!
Hey, great to see an image from you too! ;-) This is simply a wonderful alpine landscape. This has it all, and makes me wish I was there taking it all in.
The only suggestion I have, and not a nit really, is not about he contrast in the far range, the "atmosphere" as you mention would naturally reduce the contrast somewhat. But to me, the shadows that are there run a little purple; especially in the center peak. Not sure if that color would be something I would expect to see. Heck, I dunno.
Great stuff, looking forward to more from your trip.
