Monsoon Lightning

This was taken last summer during our annual monsoon storms. My only wish is that I would have driven out to the desert instead of getting this with my neighbor's house in it. Anyway, this storm was moving directly toward me and I got a lot of different images with this amazing lightning right from my front porch. Comments & critiques welcome!

Good job capturing the lightning so well. I also really like the way the trees look, and the colors/light of the sky.

I've taken lightning photos before and this is a good one. The warmth of the light around the home adds a sense of tension--blue and ominous lightning against a black background contrasted with the glow of the home bespeaks of threat and shelter.
So, desert or tepee would have been preferred, perhaps, but this is a humanity-at-risk concept photo. Be careful.

Spectacular lightning bolt. While you neighbor's house and pick-up may not be the most picturesque setting, it does give context to the photo.

Very dramatic lightening. It looks like it is frying the neighbors house.

Ouch! Looks like a direct hit on the neighbors house, obviously not. Great capture. I like that the lightning bolt is centered and its color contrast with the incandescent lighting. Looks like a great storm to watch from the comfort of your own porch.

Great job on this Tonia, the bolt looks fully energized
Neat how it seems to be striking the house, the overall comp works nicely here.
Well done & TFS! :toast:

Great lightning capture, Tonia! The comp you have in this picture makes it almost seem like the lightning is supplying electrical energy to light the house. I like the contrast, as Larry mentioned, of the comforting warm look of the home with the dark, scary sky slashed by dangerous lightning. So in that sense, your neighbors' house provides a unique look and perspective that the desert may not have given. Looks like this might be a great stock photo that would be of value in advertising.

Thank you everyone! As this storm got closer the thunder kept setting off car alarms and it was then I thought, "maybe this is no longer a good idea." Glad I got this though before letting safety outweigh the image!

The lights were turned off before the lightning struck, right? :jump: Night shooting is fun and the results here are pleasing. Excellent judgement on the processing. Hope you weren't using a metal tripod.

Powerful shot. Terrific lightning strike. Well captured combunation this "natural disaster" (if I can call it natural disaster) with soft light with quiet house in the FG. Well done Tonia.
