Invasion of Ice Spiders

These ice crystals are interesting. They form when the temperature drops abruptly in the humid air adjacent to liquid water. Here, the brook was still flowing until a below-zero cold snap. The dark are of clear "black ice" was the last to freeze over, so it has fewer of the radial crystal arrays. I thought the progression from many to fewer crystals sort of implied motion, as if they were advancing into the darker area like a swarm of spiders or maybe crabs.

Good progression of density of these delicate ice pinwheels. Never tire of nature's designs. :wavey:

Another excellent ice abstract. Nicely composed and very sharp from edge to edge. :toast:

Very nice Wayne, I was trying to capture a shot similair to this but wasn't having much luck. You captured the detail great and the contrast between the black ice and the pure white crystals works well. Just to point out a small thing, there seems to be a dust or water spot about a third of the way up from the bottom on the right side of the image that you might want to clone out. I'm not being picky here, I just wanted to bring it to your attention.
Well done

Thanks John, I noticed that "fuzzy" little ice ball too. It probably fell from a nearby tree. I did think about cloning it out, but decided to leave it there (as well as a couple of other "non-conforming" ice structures) for the sake of honesty because I regard this shot as more documentary than artistic. (I have come to happily accept my lifelong role in photography as an illustrator rather than an artist.)

Neat. It shows so well how the crystals have grown. And a nice abstract. Very sharp.
