The Subway in Zion, NP, is a fascinating place and a really fun hike to get there. I find myself searching out new comps and different elements every time I go. This last trip was no different, but I feel like I may finally be running out of original and new elements to shoot.

When I arrived at the actual Subway with fellow NPN'ers Mark Hespenheide and Kane Engelbert, there were a lot of leaves in the main pool and a lot of placed maple leaves around the edges of the pools and potholes. This is something I really have come to dislike over the years. I don't mind the swirling leaves, as I believe that actually does occur naturally after a good storm strips the leaves in the area and they wash into the Subway. However, it is becoming more and more the norm to see photographers and their buddies bringing in bags of leaves from downstream, placing them all around and then dumping the rest in the pools.

Great combo of the colors in the rock and the swirling leaves. The image has a nice, dynamic feel with the swirls, too. Real fine take on the Subway area! Something nice and different.

I like the colours and the circles of the leaves very much.

Jimmy,
I just love this intimate landscape. Almost surreal. The curves and textures are outstanding.

Definitely a new perspective on the subway. Theres a special balance in this photo that keeps me staring into it, almost like being hypnotized, possibly from the swirls. I think all the curves bring this together perfectly.

Different take on a frequently photographed scene Jimmy! I'm not usually big on swirling water/leaf photos, but this is pretty cool!

Really cool and original shot! If anything, a bit more room around the swirl in the lrc would be nice.

Great, unique image of this area, Jimmy. Really like how you have brought out the colors in the rock and how they contrast with the warm tones in the swirling leaves.

The placement of the swirls along with the beautiful colors throughout the frame make this a fine image. So people are actually dumping leaves into the stream here? Wow! :frown:

You've got to be kidding    People are actualy hauling in leaves? That is a new one. I did see one photographer arranging some leaves around the Crack. I told him he was messing up my comp! He didn't seem to care. I do like thintimate nature of this, and not your usual shot of this geologic wonder.

This is totally cool, Jimmy; you took a common 'trick' and put into an uncommon comp--it looks fresh and original!
I'm with you on the leaves--those cretins should be forced to do community service raking leaves...

Great Shot!, Jimmy. It is different and I very much enjoy looking at this. You comp worked out really nice and I like the interesting colors. I'm with you on the leaves too! I find that here also in some of the more popular places for fall shooting. Excellent work!

I really enjoy all the different elements of this image- the swirls, the textures and colors on the rock, and the overall tone and feeling of the image. I also really enjoy and respect such a unique and different take on an icon. For some reason, though, the image doesn't appeal to me too much as a whole. I've returned to it several times, though, which I suppose is the sign of a really intriguing piece of art. :toast:

This is cool! I have not seen many shots where the swirls were the main subject. Nice to be able to focus on other things in such a place.
