Adirondack Dawn

Gallery: LandscapePosted August 29, 2011256 views15 comments
This panorama is cropped from an image I shot over the weekend while camping on an island in the Adirondacks. The whole frame is posted the Man and Nature Gallery.

QUESTIONS:
1. Composition -- Does this panorama stand up on its own, or should I just go with the full 2x3 that includes the canoe?
2. Processing -- Also, does the darker one with the canoe look better than the slightly lighter pano? (The darker one is a more literal capture of the pre-dawn scene, but I am wondering if the lighter one looks better to others just because it's "easier to see"?

Thanks.

Canon 50D
Sigma 17-70
Two exposures, 0.166 sec. and 0.4 sec. @ f/16; ISO 100
Tripod and 2-sec. timer
Hand-blended in CS5; Bow of canoe and tower on a mountain cloned out.

Wayne, I like both versions, but I think I prefer the full frame with the canoe included. The only thing that detracts somewhat for me in the pano is the rock being so close to the bottom of the frame. Is this Blue Mountain Lake?

I like the canoe shot, but this definitely can stand on it's own. As for brightness, I did find the canoe to be slightly dark, but not overly so. Good job on both, though. The color and clouds are gorgeous.

Thanks guys.
ZACK -- That's Blue Mountain (minus the hardware on top) but not Blue Mt. Lake. I shot this from an Island in South Pond, NW of Blue Mountain. COMPOSITION. I would have liked more room on the bottom, too, but did not move my boat in time to catch the light, so I took the lazy route, cropping instead of extensive cloning (especially since I like it with the canoe.)

I prefer the full image and might brighten that one a touch.

This really looks good Wayne. I prefer it over the one with the canoe, even though that is very nice. You captured a wonderful feel. I do wish the rock wasn't as close to the bottom of the frame in this version, but still very nice!

This is beautiful Wayne. Fantastic lighting and color. I think the panoramic composition works very well here as it emphasizes the expansive feel of the landscape. Your cloning job looks very well executed here as well. I like the slightly lighter presentation here - especially for the foreground rock.

As for the two images I think I do prefer this composition primarily because I like the panoramic composition so well. I do think on the M&N post it would be better to see all of the canoe.

Excellent work on both images overall. Thanks for sharing!!

Composition - I prefer the pano version. Processing - I prefer the lighter version, the darker is just a little too dark IMO. This really protrays the pre-sunrise mood so nicely; so peaceful and serene.. Gorgeous color too.

What a beautiful scene Wayne, very serene. I don't know if can be done but it would be nice to see the bottom of the shadow of that foreground rock and a little more detail of the rock itself. Either way I love the peacefulness of this scene and the distance you have created with the shadows. Top it off with the color this one definitely stands on its own.

Wayne,
I love this photo and prefer it over the shot with the canoe. Even though I do like the canoe, this image is simply superb!

Oh, and by the way, isn't south pond great?

I prefer the shot with the canoe--manily because i cant stand gratuitous large fg rocks--and the canoe gives the rock a raison d'etre.
Pretty though--both versions!

I definitely like the lighter version better, Wayne, though it still feels a bit dark to me. Does capture the predawn light, though.

Didn't realize South Pond had such a great view, much different than what can be seen from the shore. Will have to paddle this one before the years out.

Gorgeous Wayne. Great job of "hiding" the canoe! The M&N version is great too, but this one just oozes peace and tranquility.

To answer your question, I prefer the pano version. With the canoe version I'm wishing for a little more brightness to really bring the canoe in to the fold a little more. This one here is just beautiful.
