or could be titled mozambique burns ii.

as with the rest of mozambique, the chimanimani mountains are also burned. dusk had just fallen and someone had lit a fire on a path on which we had been walking just a few hours before. the fire spread out from its heart, forming the ring (or eye) that you see here. the flames threw a glow on the descending mist ... this is probably best viewed in a dark room, and i have uploaded a L A R G E R version. Please have a look!

d700, 80-200mm, tripod, some seconds.

Very striking image!
The circle of fire is both captivating and saddening.

This is really engaging, due both to the ring and the mist or smoke as you point out. Nicely seen and executed!

For fun I did a "screen crop" to eliminate the left side and turn this into a vertical. There's almost a dizzying sense that the ring is falling through space, something seen from a space telescope perhaps. I don't know if it meets your goals for the photo, but that vertical crop has interesting possibilities! :toast:

Mordor, indeed. This has a sinister feel to it and the large version is startling in its clarity. You can almost see the pulse of the heat. Excellent image

thanks for the comments.

hank - you're right and i do have a vertical version (slightly earlier, slightly brighter ...) and you're right there are intriguing possibilities! thanks.
