Calming Down

I've been "on the road" for the last week visiting some gorges and interesting places here in Austria.
Unfortunately because of the heavy rain over the last weekend the water levels were very high everywhere. Instead of getting better a little rain here and there kept the water wild all week long.
This gorge here was on my to-do-list for a while now and I was excited to be there finally. Well, as I said, the water wasn't the best and on top of that half the canyon was blocked by a mudflow that destroyed all the paths and bridges there. It will take a while to restore the gorge.
Just before the blocked passage I found this little collection of different types of rocks in the creek. I took a few shots, sat down on a big rock and starred into the water to calm down. It worked.

Canon 5DMII, Zeiss VS 35-70mm, 3 exposures for DOF and one double processing for the detail in the water.

I appreciated all comments/thoughts and will try to catch up with looking at the great shots that you guys posted recently. If you like details you might want to look at the LARGER version.

Hi Andreas, I thought at first this just looked to bright, and maybe for my taste it is just a bit. Now I have been looking at this for a while and really enjoying what you did. I like your comp very much and in the large version the detail, colors and texture are just wonderful. I'm glad I took time to look at this for awhile. Cheers!

Thanks, Nick for looking at the image a little longer. This isn't the kind of image that immediately grabs you and might appeal only to a few people. But for me (and obviously you) shots like this one have some power hidden on a deeper level.

This certainly looks a little unusual but in a good way. Beautiful soft colours; I wonder what darkening some of the light and light midtones would do?

Beautiful shot Andreas. Love the varied coloration of the rocks, as well as the water color and water action. At first, I was also thinking "too bright" perhaps, but this is growing on me.

Thanks for the feedback about brightness. The shot is quite light (it was taken around noon) and I'm working on a rather darkly calibrated (120cd/m2) screen. These factors might not look too good on some screens.

The version on my server has darker mid-tones ... check it out and let me know if it's better ...

Yes, the one on your server is perfect as far as brightness goes. Like the others, I did feel like the version posted here was a bit bright. Otherwise, the shot works very well for me and you certain made something out of your time in the gorge, even if the trip was otherwise a disappointment. The varied colors of the rocks are quite appealing.

Oh I like this Andreas. Such an understated beauty that many would walk right by. The mix of colors and textures is wonderful. Great job in bringing out the colors of the rocks. (I love your title too!)

I like the delicate details in the rocks although a bit bright on my uncalibrated monitor. I might consider a small crop of the top to remove the small dark wave just to see what you think. :toast:

I love this a lot. It's the kind of image that you have to look at a little bit longer to make it grow on you. The colors are really amazing. The processing looks spot on. Well done, andreas. :toast:

Your "high key" treatment of the rocks and water works wonderfully. Great vision and execution!

I'm not sure how much the white/black borders are contributing to it, but I prefer the one on your website.

Andreas,

My immediate thought is that this one here is a bit on the bright side. Then I opened the large version... Wow, I love it. It is on the bright side overall, but I think it's truly an asset to the image. The variety of color and textures in the rocks is simply amazing - not to mention the water all holding it together. I'm loving this one. No nits or suggestions.

I had another look at the large version and I think I agree with Lon's assessment. If you had a dark border, this would look better.

Andreas, an outstanding image and processing in my opinion. You teach me to explore all the delightful details and textures, and the overall composition provides an excellent framing for them.
