I stood on the side of the road feeling the wind in my hair, breathing deep of the cool, moist air as the storm moved closer. I was photographing the storm clouds across the lake when I felt the first drops and decided to try and outrace the rain and keep shooting.
This is a 4 image blend for dynamic range and(I think)DOF

I love the overall blue tone to this image. Almost feels like I can feel the 'cool, moist air' myself. Also on my lists of pluses is the beautiful texture in the beach pebbles and the little breaks in the clouds. The only distraction IMO is the breaking wave or mostly submerged rock or whatever it is just off the top of the large beach rock. My eyes keep coming back to it when they'd much rather be focused on the beach or clouds.

Hi Dean - I really like this image. The drama in the clouds and the cool tones convey all of the feelings you described above (minus the standing on the road part - feels much more isolated than that!). While the boulder is quite dominant, I like it and find the hints of light on the boulder and the pebbles to add a lot of interest.

Dean,

To be honest, at first I thought this was a bit static. But the longer I look at this the more I like it. Sarah brought up the subtle, but nice lighting hitting the rock and I'm now really enjoying the cool, blue tones throughout the entire scene. I am wondering though if about a 10% crop of the sky might make the composition stronger. You've got a great sky, but a lot of it. A small crop, but not so much that you create a 50/50 comp. Just a thought.

It does lack a little of the wow factor, but that's ok because not every image needs that. This works just fine.

This is very nice Dean. I too am enjoying the overall cool tone of this image. I also like the light and feel of this. I had the same feeling as Lon in that the more I look at this the better it gets for me. Very nice work Dean.

Wonderful, Dean. The sky is amazing and the hard contrast looks quite nice here. I agree with Lon - it's not a "WOW" shot but a pleasure to look at for sure.

I love your description. This has a stark, stormy feel to it. I agree that this is a "grower," it gets much better if you take a moment to look at it and imagine the conditions. I'm with Lon on the crop. My favorite part is the bright area in the distance, and the crop strengthens its position.

Dean,

Such a minor change, and I think comparing the two, a world of difference. What do you think? Part of my thinking is that with so much sky, as the viewer I'm thinking that's your main subject. But I would venture to guess that it's both the sky, the rock and the overall moody, stormy drama and the LIGHT that is capturing your attention. By bringing down the viewpoint by slightly cropping the sky, I think you bring all those things together more as a whole rather than sky vs. rock. Hope I'm making sense. If not, please disregard and move to another line.... Thanks for the repost.

Very nice image Dean, I especially like the superb sky and the subtle light on the rock in front. Really makes for that stormy mood! :toast:
